eney one use one i have heard very good reports on this round and was thinking of getting one for long rainge shooting / roe deer may not be every ones idea of stalking i know but can do the close stuff now want to spend more time doing the long rainge stuff its still a art in itself so how good is it wanting to go to 800yards + with 160g vlds so can it hack it your recomendatons on a gun etc can spend up to 2000on the gun 1500 on the scope

I assume that the reference to long range / 800m is just a bait in order to start an argument / debate? If it was intended seriously then my suggestion (based on a certain amount of experience) is .300 win mag or 7mm rem mag + range finder + 20x Scope + mate to spot for you + dog to find wounded deer + second morgage to pay for ammount of ammo required for practice + willing buyer for the rifle after a couple of years when you realise that 800m roe deer shooting is not really the way forward. I can't say this enough. The WSSM's are a dead issue. No rifles being made for it, and ammo is going to dry up and blow away. The WSM's are hanging on by a thread but you guys in the UK are about the only folks who dote on it any more. Forget the WSSM's and concentrate on something more viable. JMHO.~Muir

I decided to take part in the WSM idea after reading about a couple of guys in the states, who were shooting this chambering, they had built a pair of rifles as I recall, some of the early work was quite interesting, then a mate bought a Howa 7mm WSM, again I liked what I saw, on thinking about comments from statesiders on AR, regards brass etc, & the likelyhood that my new found interest, in the words of Mr Eastwood, would dry up & blow away, I laid in a truckload of brass, some in 7MM WSM, & some in .300 WSM for necking, so, we will persevere with the mucking about , until such time as the tube is no longer performing, & see what has come to pass re the future on this one, as the action is a pretty well made affair I could always stick something else on! . I never know if I should laugh or cry when people put up posts like this. I think your reply just about sums it up nicely.

I suggest if people actually want to shoot at live quarry at the quoted distances, there are some folks running "tours" to Afghanistan that run a comprehensive training programme. I believe that they have vacancies in their scheme.

I looked onto most of the 7mm's a while ago for a deer/long range rifle.

The 7mm wsm is easily capable of 1000 yrds using 160 - 180 very good BC bullets. There are plenty of good deer bullets too.

Dont expect more than around a 1000 - 1500 rounds down the barrel though and there are slight variations on the cartridge depending upon if you use standard wsm brass or neck up/down other brass.

Steve: Smart move. The WSM's seem to be hanging on, like I said, but it's the WSSM that is fading faster than winter daylight. There are retailers here in my area -and Montana is BIG on shooting- that have dusty bags of WSSM brass on their shelves that they can't sell at cost.~Muir

I have been saying that for 2 years Muir. The big give away was when new rifles normally being sold for over £550 started selling for £275, and the lack of ability to find brass.

 

[325wsm]

I have tried them all and in the end stuck with the 325WSM and the 25WSSM. Both are proving to be an excellent choice.

The 25 being a short length case is ideal for me shooting a right handed rife left hand - I dont get a bloody nose from a quick second shot as I do with the 25-06.

The 325 is just so versatile. It will shoot from 130 -220 gr well and 180gr superbly. For me nothing else come close for an everyday rifle in the UK and it has all but superceded my 300WSM and the 308.

Despite loaded ammo not being available in the Uk for either cal I am having no problem getting both fired and new brass from the US and now have enough for at least a couple of barrel lifes which coincidentally are a lot lot longer than the UK forums suggest.

I have a 300wsm barrel that has seen at least 4500 rounds and it still looks like new!

By the way if anyone wants to try a 325 and already has a Howa WSM I have an 'as new' Best PacNor s/s barrel ready threaded chambered and proofed, for sale !
