Pine Marten's symbolically-charged drilling.

Suggest getting a letter from the Dept of Business, Innovation and Skills stating that fact - hopefully with mucho official headings and stamps on it - send it off to Germany with copies of your FAC, (EFP as well?), the dealer's RFD certificate, vat registration document, and see what they say to that?

Until today, I had done all of that except for the letter from the Dept of BIS, and I've now forwarded that on. So I'm hoping this will put their minds at rest. I just need them to believe it...

My word, the chap in Germany says "Perfekt!". I have no idea why this took so long. Anyway, it should be on its' way to me just about in time for St Nicholas' Day, assuming I've been a good little Pine Marten.

Result. I was worried there for a bit.

Didn't add "Alles in ordnung" as well? They do love a bit of official paper don't they!

I think that with regards to firearms-related paperwork, we're in no position to give the Germans or anyone else pretty much any lessons... But, to be fair, he did use CAPITAL LETTERS for all the documents he mentioned.

"[...] aber es fehlt noch Ihre IMPORTLIZENZ. Erst mit diesem Dokument bekommen wir unserre EXPORTLIZENZ."

16 bore great for geese :)
I have two boxes of 16 bore number 4 bismuth for ducks which is probably the most expensive ammunition I've ever bought. I didn't think I'd ever need it, and I was going to sell it to someone off this site who vanished. However it's now turned out that I do need if after all! But you're right, it's no 'fowling piece. I had to sell that to buy this. I do have some bismuth number 1s for my 12 bore though if I ever need that.

I just ordered some from Strobl.cz although I'm a bit perplexed by the online ordering process that ends by thanking me for my order without ever having asked me for any form of payment. I daresay they'll invoice me or something. I've had this before ordering CZ scope mounts. It all seemed weird and then they turned up in the post 48 hours later. Anyway, it seemed to make more sense than ordering from Australia. Frankonia had them too but more expensive. Not much more though so I'll fall back on them if the Czech option falls through.

For Pete's sake... They want a bank transfer which just makes the fees silly for such a small item. Frankonia.fr doesn't deliver overseas. Frankonia.de only delivers if you order more than £100s worth. Where's the bloody common market when you need it?

Thanks Mick! After going through a Czech company that would only accept bank transfers, a French one that won't post abroad, a German one that only does big-ticket orders and another French one that won't take cards, I have finally managed to order 7x57R and 16b snap caps from a gunshop advertising on Naturabuy.com. That's taken a disproportionate amount of time...

Just find some PPU 7x57R ammo or brass (their ammo is cheaper than most brass alone).
Sellier & Bellot is good, and the 173-gr ammo at 2,375 fps matches the regulation load for these old drillings and combination guns.

I am going to load up some various bullets with Hybrid 100-V powder, which has lower pressures for good velocities in these long barrels.
W-760 / H-414 is supposed to be the most accurate powder, but I only recently found some of each.

Remington and Federal 140-gr 7x57 Mauser ammo is loaded pretty mild, at 2,660 fps for a 24-inch barrel, but still hotter than the RWS, S&B, or Norma 139-gr 7x57R ammo at 2,550 fps in a 27-inch barrel - still, it is under the max pressure for a 7x57R or older 7x57 bolt action in 1893, 1894 or 1896 Mauser actions. In a pinch, if they were cheap enough, you could pull the bullets from the Rem or Federal ammo, use the powder minus 2 grains, and reload the bullets in the rimmed cases. I have not yet had the need to try that.

You should always check the BSRC range dustbins after a Range Day as you would not believe what some folk discard. 6 boxes of once fired Norma 300Win Mag to name but one.

Hornady loads the 162-gr SST in 7x57R ammunition, and their brass retails here for $35.00 / box of 50. Since it is labeled ".275 Rigby", I assume they are marketing it in the UK.

PS: I saw two JP Sauer drillings advertised in a shop where I was looking for something else. Neither was a nice as yours, but still solid and good. Both were 16x16x7x57R.
With mounts but no scope, $1,795.00 USD.
With 7x50 Zeiss in claw rings, $2,595.00 USD

My understanding is that main avoidable cause of stringing of the pattern is distortion of pellets during their journey between cartridge-case and muzzle on firing. If this is correct, are not higher pressures and longer, thinner columns of shot such as those found in smaller-bore guns relative to the the 12bore likely to worsen stringing?

Yes, that is well known. Gough Thomas wrote about it and there's a good discussion in Shotgunning: the art and the science by Bob Brister. Longer thinner shot columns produce poorer patterns than shorter fatter columns. The .410 3" magnum is perhaps the worst example. The 16ga however, doesn't seem to lose much on the 12ga.
