Isn't .275 Rigby the British name (rip-off?) of 7x57, rather than the rimmed cartridge?

If my drilling turns out to be as nice as you think it is, then it was a super bargain indeed! I hope it is. I've waited long enough. I've even found somewhere to sight it in before its' outing in early January despite the fact that Bisley is closed for the duration of the holidays.
 
Yes, Rigby made a bolt action rifle, the ".275 HV" ( high velocity ). Ethnic marketing, like the ".280 Remington" rather than ".284 Remington", or the .264 Win Mag, rather than 6.5mm Win Mag.

At the time I was buying my 20 ga/7x57R, I chased a Borovnik 16ga/7x57R with scope from an estate, which had the price moved up on me, to $8,000. I passed, of course, but that is the reality for really nice engraved drillings and combos.

The dealer here which carries Hornady brass for the 7x57R, also has it for the 7x57 Mauser and is labeled ".275 Rigby". They also carry Hornady and PPU brass for the 8x57JRS and 8x60S. I know that Hornady sells 7x57R ammuntion in Europe, so the .275 Rigby on the label makes me assume their 7x57R ammunition is sold in the UK along with their 7x57 Mauser ammunition and brass. That is what I was trying to convey, in too few words.

Is it possible, and worthwhile, for you SD owners of 7x57R to get up a brass order from a USA supplier, or S&B or PPU brass from France?

Hello Southern. There are hardly any of us 7x57R users here, but that said, sourcing brass isn't a problem. I bought a load of new S&B brass at knockdown prices a few weeks ago. In addition, there are no restrictions on selling brass, so you can order it from anywhere in the EU if you like, it's not a problem. Factory ammunition is harder because there's hardly a market for it, but William Evans were happy to order me some if I wanted it. It's just that the delivery costs were about the same as the ammunition, for just one box, so it wasn't worth it. That's why I just picked some up in France when I happened to be there anyway.

Is there a really elaborate practical joke being played on me here? I just collected my snap caps from the Post Office and the 16b ones are fine. But the rifle ones appear to be 7mm08 ones. Stamped onto them is "7x57 REM.", which doesn't even exist! This is all winding me up now!
 
Ok Lawrence.................this drilling you now have, let me get this right as I don't want to wade through the whole thread. Is it a 16 bore shotgun with a 7x57 rifle barrel?

If its a 16 bore shotgun.........................I have a little surprise for you!!

Indeed it is Malcolm! Except that I don't have it. The damned thing is still in Germany. I could try losing my rag but it wouldn't make any difference.

Not quite, but if I don't have it by 29th December, then yes. I also had an offer a couple of weeks ago from a kind member of the SD to pick it up but at that stage, I thought we were on the edge of a breakthrough. I was wrong. Or not. I don't know. Information is sporadic and sparse.
 
Sorry to hear this is taking so long. To be honest I organised my own shipping from Australia and as its not part of the EU I have to go through additional paperwork. I hope this cheers you up while you wait, and it will be worth the wait.
 
It's currently sitting in the cabinet, all shiny, fully-functional and as new, just waiting to be taken to the range in a fortnight to check the zero and test my reloads. I have the sling that I had made specially for it, and am waiting for the made-to-measure leg-of-mutton gunslip which is currently being built. After that, I have a lot of old 16-bore cartridges begging to be used on clays later on in the year, when the days are a bit longer I think.

I don't think it will be fired in anger before June though.

In the BASC auction, one of the lots is a Sussex MacNab, going for a fallow deer in the morning, then up onto the downs in search of a partridge or two, then down into the valley for a brown trout. Now that looks like a day almost tailor-made for the drilling! I have every reason to believe though that the bidding will rapidly outstrip my budget...
 
I have loaded a test batch, but haven't had a chance to go to the range yet to try them. So I shall be trying out rounds with 150gr DL1 bullets, and 39.5, 40.0, 40.5 and 41.0gr of N-140. Well, I think that's right, it's a while since I loaded them now. I may have gone all the way to 41.5gr, I can't remember exactly. One of those should do the job.
 
I am using the chronograph to keep me safe.
My next time out will be with 139-gr Hornady over some H-414 and some VARGET, and 154-gr SST over H-4350.

Here is an old article on handloading the 7x57 Mauser, from Rifle Magazine. Of course, you have to back off 10% or so for a drilling.

I found my notes on VV powders and loads for the 7x57R. These are from the VV data, reformatted by another drilling owner for comparison, and posted on the site of a drilling / double rifle store.
