Telephone and Broadband help needed !

I need to get a phone line with broadband from one building to another. The distance is about 90m.

The incoming line has a 3 phones and a broadband router. I know the whereabouts of the master socket.

What is the best way of getting a phone and broadband into a further building? Is it as simple as putting a wire between the two, putting a socket on the end, filter and router ?

Thanks in advance

Ed

be careful - 90m is about the limit for a stretch of Cat5. Assuming you have line of sight, you're better off going for a wireless bridge solution.

One Q: I don't suppose the two buildings are on the same spur of the ring main are they?

+1 - I would go for the extender that jumps on your wiring :thumb:

Buildings on separate ring mains.

Does a wireless bridge solution plug into the back of a router..... run up to a high point with a cable then beam across to a receiver, then a cable runs from the receiver to a further router ? Are they simple to install ?

Essentially - yes

I'm surprised that you can even stretch a cat more than a few metres. Must be a big one.

You are going to run a cat5 cable to extend the phone (one pair of wires) so you might as well try to run your LAN over the remaining wire pairs. Eg cat5 has 8 wires . So use wires 7 & 8 for phone and use wires 1,2 , 3&6 for the LAN.

A very special sort. Shot only on a full harvest moon, when it has rained in the previous hour, at a specific temperature - and over unicorn bait with a special calibre.......... or it just doesn't work.......

2 p worth , extend you copper by using 5 pair from the master nt5/a or close to other building add a two gang socket -: lj5/1a master output socket to feed new phone jack out puts x2 face plate , say pair 1 blue blue white insert on 2 /5 no ringer needed leaves 4 pairs if you wish to run /extn cat mods only saying 5 pair as this would be jell filled cable not internal cable that will degrade out side . or use cat/5/6 and do same but cover in kopex

Yes, that's exactly what I was just going to say!

Would I then be able to plug the cat5 into a wireless router ? That would effectively be having 2 routers running on one incoming BT line ?

Cheers

No, you would have one router in the main building, which then has a Local Area Network ( LAN ).
this is then extended via 90 metres of (external ) CAT5 cable to your other building.
In the other building you can plug into an Access Point (Wireless AP).

You now have the same LAN in two buildings eg same IP address range.
PM me if you need any more help as I do this sort of thing for a living.
