Keeping a carcass cool while traveling home

I either use an igloo cool box with ice packs and frozen water bottles if I am going on a long journey or have a plasterers bath and spread open the ribs. I have also acquired 3 bread crates which I am going to cut up (At some point) which will raise the carcass up and out of the blood

Excellent idea with the bread crates 👍

I usually go away for 3 days at a time . It's a bugger this time of year if your are Kippings in the truck , even more of a bugger if I shoot one on the 1st outing!!!!! As above its essential you have a CLEAN carcass that's been cooled in the shade and covered so the flies can't can't get at it . If I shoot one on first outing in the summer it's cooled .skinned and broken down immediately. The dog gets the offal for the next 3 days as his tucker and the rest is covered in muslin and hanged in a cool place out of the sun and I'll eat wat I can .the rest placed in cooler box

If I shoot one on the second or third day it's hung cooled and covered . Then in the car with the Airton on for the 3.5 hour journey home

I have no power , just the truck but I do fill the cool box with freezer packs .these will last 2 days depending on how hot it is

Cool carcass as much as possible in shade. place in trunk with lid , Fly proof. plus Four bottles frozen water.
No smell, no blood , no ticks, no keds on the march

Good morning all

After some advice please.

I am off on a stalk about two hours from home latter this month. If successful I want to bring the carcass back home with me, hopefully a Roe.

So, the question is what is the best way to keep the carcass cool while traveling back home

Thank you in advance

Hi

Is this a one-off stalk with a Guide? If so I would come to an agreement based on simply purchasing an agreed amount of pre-prepared venison and let the beast you shoot go to the Game Dealer or where and however the Pro Stalker manages his larder.

Getting it home is one thing but have you also considred what happens thereafter?

Lovely but for one beast a year?

No mate - bought at the start of lockdown. I live in London and my ground is about 2 hours away. Farm that houses my chiller is isolating, so bringing home what isn't wanted locally on the day. Stalking everyother weekend.

As other have said, I have come back from Scotland with reds in a plasters bath and sealed bags of ice.

Cheers,

Mike

Well, in that case just ignore me - most do. And by the way I'm not your "mate"!

At 500mm square those would be too big for my Toolstation plasterers bath...

Three of these fit my bath and will also go in the dishwasher if necessary...

I’ve modified both of my deer boxes (one I use in the car and the other on the back of the quad) by fitting the lid off off a 12v cool box. It‘s not a fridge but it helps the cooling down process and means I can spend more time out on the ground stalking knowing that the carcass is not spoiling and I don’t have to have the air con on full blast for the hour and a half it takes me to drive home. For the quad box, I have a long cable that connect to my aux trailer socket and I run that into the trailer to power that box on the way home.

Hi Klenchblaize,

I have up to now been very lucky and have been able to stalk close to home so have not had to worry too much about how long it takes from the field to the fridge.

I have a tall ex commercial fridge so storage once home is not a problem.

For me it is important to eat what i shoot, hence wanting to bring the carcass home. While no butcher I am slowly improving at skinning and breaking down the carcass.

what is the best way to keep the carcass cool while traveling back home

Per scientific guidance, the bacterial build up on a carcass is minimised by bringing the carcass below 7⁰C as soon after despatch as possible. The UK Food Standards Agency actually advocates 4⁰C for small game.

I use frozen 2l water bottles to produce a well of cold air in a 100l lidded tupperware 100l.webp when transporting smaller game. In the case of boar, I will also insert these ice blocks into the chest cavity as those carcasses take a long time to cool.

One caveat: if you freeze a freshly killed beast, it can make the meat tough. So for smaller beasts like Roe, I place ice bottles around rather than inside carcass.

I'm lazy I just pop in to the nearest supermarket and buy two bags of ice and put in the carcass tray plus air-con on 18. OK so far

Blue freezer blocks that look like quarter size hot water bottles. Except they're blue and cold. I use them also if decoying on a warm day to put in with shot birds once they've been lain on their backs for a while. Or as others say plastic one litre milk bottles or similar.

Cheese cloth/muslin to keep the flies off. Chest spreader in. Deer in the tray in the back of the car. All windows open somewhat for circulation. Never an issue 👍

I have used meat tubes mesh. Slide the deer inside tie off both ends. Keeps the inside free of intruders

i think you can get it from butchery suppliers
