Three rifles to cover all Uk game and vermin on a budget

.17 hmr, plus a good 6.5 calibre rifle with the right bullet weight and construction, will kill everything in the uk at normal ranges,so,400 yards and under.
true and good cartridges both of them, like the 6.5x55 swede took my first few roe with one over east yorks with 139gr ppu :),

those would be my picks though cartridges wise for 3 rifles to cover all uk vermin, fox, deer/boar

miss the 17 hmr cracking small vermin round taken some rabbits and ground feeding grey squirrels with it over the years👌

I have:
.22lr for reasons stated
.308win w/mod
.303 for being loud and just nostalgic reasons

Want .223 for foxing etc at some point

I'm a big fan of stuff with a long barrel life and stuff that i grew up shooting, and those 4 cover all of those bases really

I'm one of the boring group, .308 for deer, .223 for fox, .22lr for the small stuff.

My main reason was actually because I shoot left-handed due to being left eye dominant. I didn't want to narrow my down buying options by picking niche calibers

22 rim fire

223 or 222

7x65r or 7x57 ( or anything that shoots a 100 to 180 grain monolithic bullet at 2650 plus fps muzzle velocity.
lr?

solid list :) if one moves out of GB, and starts also doing driven hunts for boar and moose and such, or do very dense brush stalking, i'd maybe add a short barreled 8x57 JS to that, or a lever actioned 30 plus caliber.

7x65, 7x64, 8x57, 30-06 are all pretty much 6 of 1 and 2 3s. They do the same job.

If you want to move up a thumpiness to deal with big animals at close range you really should be looking at 300 gn bullet - ie the 9.3x62, 375s etc. or if you want real stoping power then the 416s at a minimum.

On a tight budget I'd go for a .22lr, .222 and a .308. All of those can be found in really good value rifles from the likes of CZ, BSA, Parker Hale etc. You could probably get all three for £500 including usable scopes.

Hello Heym .-) Fair enough, although the 8,23 mauser is a good bit bigger than 7,62 30 cal though. However no lever actions i know of is made in it, so the point is maybe moot. I guess the 45-70 in a lever might be more up your alley then, for a dangerous game/very dense brush gun. ;)

But let's call that a possible 4h option, to maybe in time add to the main 3 which this thread focuses on, if one travels and want to do driven hunts and/or hunt dangerous game or in very dense brush :-) 👍

A lot of 223 on here. Why a 223 over a 243? I've got a 308 and was thinking of adding 22lr and 243.... Keen to see what the preference for 223. I'm guessing it's cheaper ammo?

I am almost in complete agreement with the majority of people here. Probably being a bit older I have older calibers though. I have a 22lr, a 222, and a 30-06. Every type of U.K. hunting is covered by these rifles.

could do this with just 2 if you where able to hand load , however 1. .22 Lr as it can run a whole range of ammo and its cheap to feed 2 . 223 rem as ammo is plentiful smaller quarry at range ( thinking rabbits , fox, crows and the deer species we can shoot with a 50 grain bullet ) . finally one of the 6.5 mm 85-140 grain covers all your deer . Now to do this with just 2 rifles 22LR and a 243 win as you can send 58 grains to 100 grain
OR .22 Hornet and .243 another man might go to one of the 6.5 mm rifles but you do need to be a well experienced to shoot rabbits in kind of wind when you you ger out to 2-300 yards . The Hornet is perfect for denning foxes / cubs 150 yards away with a good moderator !
