But I have both a 270 and a 7x57 so what does that make me other than quite well equipped?
Sensible 👍

Was said fully in jest and aimed at a certain 7x57 owner who unfortunately didnt bite lol.

Nowt wrong with any CF rifle to my mind...just like to give back to the non creedmoor crowd 👍

Don’t use the F&D mod on the range, you’ll cook it in no time.

I went for the F&D UTS 331 for my 308. It makes it sound like a 17HMR and tames the recoil right down. I figured the bigger model might last longer too but who knows.

So want to get something for deer stalking first. Not interested in posh guns like Blaser, i want something good and reliable, but not overly priced.

65CM - Going for Sauer 100 Stainless XTA. The 22 inch barrel would accommodate 65CM well i think, nice and accurate. I can then use this for a bit of targets on the range too. Optics unsure, but going for glass, for deer work it wont be more than 250m realistically, and for targets its just fun so not overly bothered, more for deer work.

.308 - going tikka, maybe a modified stock and this will have the Alpex Pro day/night scope fitted. Will buy a separate glass scope later.

Going for quick release mounts on both, not sure which, sports match HOP92 one piece, innomount or QD??

Picatinny rail, unsure?

Moderator - Wildcat or DPT i think

Bipod - no idea, want one that folds up towards the top of the barrel, any recommendations?

Probably buy the XTA this week and order the other bits online, at least ive something to start with.

Think im pretty decided on the XTA, and definaltey getting a Alpex Pro, the bits in the middle im unsure and good glass scope, probably around the £1k mark.

Happy to hear your thoughts
A reloading press and dies, lots of dies….

Get a good all round deer rifle in 308. Go for a sporter weight barrel and keep the scope nice and light.

Focus on learning to stalk, and spend your money on stalking.

Add a decent 22 rimfire and scope and use this to learn technique for shooting off sticks. You can shoot 50 rounds of 22 for every five centrefire cartridges.

Once you are experienced and worked out what you like and what you want to do then add to the armoury.

I see far too many try and get all round target oriented rifles with complex turrets etc. These are fine on the range, but once you have lugged 6kg up a hill and then missed cos turrets have got twiddled, they loose their appeal.

Cheers, think i covered both bases, got a nice 308 and 22 on order, the rest can wait 👍

I am on restricted, police approved land only and review in a few months, ex military 24 yrs, DSC1 and did the Avon and Somerset land management cse which normally gives you Open cert, but i have little deer hunting experience, im not complaining, it took 19 months to get this far though.
What is it with England implementing all this land approval, mentorship etc and closed cert. If your suitable to be entrusted with a gun of all things surely your deemed responsible and by that responsibility bring entrusted in you to be a safe guardian and user of guns you would think they'd trust you to make suitable decisions on firing said guns across land. Is land approval and Mentorship even part of firearms law ? or is it more red tape that isn't required by law. I don't understand how in Scotland you get open certs and none of this stuff, though to be fair they certainly won't grant multiple calibres on initial grants to my knowledge and are pretty thorough on ammo quantity's. Just curious is all, I understand everything centres around safety I make no qualms with that but just seems extreme and a follow up ? Never heard of that

Agree - but I did get .308, .223, and .22 LR on initial grant with coterminous shotgun relatively recently from Police Scotland, all with open certs. I sometimes wonder if being known through holding an Air Weapons Licence helps up here. Have found Police Scotland exceptional to deal with - efficient and sensible, when there have been delays with variations they are open about demand and staffing issues, think 8 weeks was the max, usually 2-4 weeks. Great service at a high standard in my experience.

Enjoy your new rifles when they arrive OP!

Really ? I only got 6.5cm and .22lr, looking to try get another .22lr was in the shop last Wednesday and they had an under lever 22 and I thought oft cha I’d bloody love that but might give it a while so they can get some faith in me 😂😂 and need to come up with the good reason 😂

I’d agree though Police Scotland seems to be very efficient, pro active and very kind to deal with imo
Much more than can be said for all the forces in England I think sounds like they have it rough there not so much with what I said on this post originally but there staffing issues and backlogs sound unbelievable

Unfortunately many FEOs and Some senior coppers have little clue and you have such it sounds like . There is no difference in any of our deer legal rifles as regards public safety , if you where to ask for one of these to shoot in a regular back garden or something , you would likely be told no Or shooting crows down from tree tops quite rightly though .
Any CF rifle that meets the law for deer really doesn't particularly matters if its .243 win ( our UK minimum for all uk deer use ) Is just as dangerous in untrained hands . This has too be brought to the table . All deer rifle are fed with equally dangerous if used without knowledge and understanding . As for 6.5 creed v 308 win ( mentioned in this thread ) are used by nato for Battle rifle and longer range by snipers in war ! They both hold a similar powder and fill and both have pretty much as makes no matter the same weight projectile !!!
Anyone who has been 24 years serving in UK military will have far more training in handling these class of guns Than the majority of police that " can use firearms in duty"
I am very keen for ( some ) forces to concentrate on things that really matter when vetting applicants.
Perhaps one day Firearms licencing will be taken away from the constabularies and the coppers can carry on with the work they really understand ?
