Rifle firing when moving safety catch.

Afternoon all,
I have a 6x47 custom build built on a Remington action with a Jewell trigger. Had the rifle 12 years no issues, until recently it occasionally fires when pushing the safety catch off. Looked at the trigger and seems clean, cant see any obvious problems. Anyone has the problem before? Any ideas for fixes?
Thanks,
Tom

Trigger pull would be the first thing I would have looked at, but you say you have looked at the trigger maybe a worn sear just a thought hopefully someone more knowledgeable will come along soon.

yes had exactly the same problem, went back to jackson rifles and was sorted but this was in 2012. not sure where you'd send one now.

Thanks for posting. Its a good reminder that safety catches are not to be trusted, can fail and should be tested occasionally.

I assume this only happen once in the field and the rest of the time were controlled tests or dry fires?!

There could be a number of things wrong - only a decent gunsmith should be trusted to fix this.

I've had a few failures. I would say change the trigger and/or get it checked by some one who knows what they are doing

I have an idea in the back of my mind that there was an alleged issue with some Remmy 700’s having an issue, never proved that I am aware of..
A quick search and AI came back with this;

Remington 700 trigger maintenance. | Shooters Forum
Remington 700 trigger issues primarily involve risks of unintentional discharge, particularly in pre-2006 "Walker" triggers and 2006–2014 X-Mark Pro (XMP) models. Defects include firing when switching off the safety or without pulling the trigger, often caused by poor sear engagement, dirt, or excessive factory sealant.
Key Remington 700 Trigger Problems
  • Unintentional Discharge: The most significant issue is the rifle firing without the trigger being pulled, often when the safety is moved to the "off" position.
  • X-Mark Pro (XMP) Recall: Models produced between May 1, 2006, and April 9, 2014, were recalled due to excessive sealant (bonding agent) in the mechanism, which can cause failure.
  • Walker Trigger Issues: Older models often face issues with the trigger connector becoming misaligned or contaminated, leading to accidental discharges.
  • Trigger Failure/Tacky Action: Due to tight tolerances, the trigger can become contaminated with dirt or, in cold weather, oil can become thick (tacky), causing the trigger to fail to release the sear (failure to fire).
  • Safety Failure: Some reports indicate that releasing the safety lever can trigger a misfire, a symptom often linked to poor maintenance or excessive modification.

Common Causes
  • Contamination: Rust, debris, or dried oil/grease inside the housing.
  • Excessive Adjustment: Too little sear engagement or a trigger weight set too low.
  • Manufacturing Defects: Excessive sealant (on XMP triggers) or poor tolerance management.
  • Replacement Issues: Some aftermarket triggers, if not adjusted correctly, can also lead to cocking or firing issues.

Remedies and Solutions
  • Check Recall Status: Verify the serial number on the Remington recall website.
  • Clean the Mechanism: Use aerosol gun cleaner/lighter fluid to flush the trigger assembly, followed by dry lubricant.
  • Adjust/Replace: If comfortable, adjust the sear engagement, or replace the trigger with a high-quality aftermarket option like Timney, Shilen, or Huber.

  • Professional Gunsmith: Have a qualified gunsmith inspect and clean the trigger to avoid potential firing issues.

I had this with an original Remmy trigger - you could almost feel something was wrong as you slipped the safety catch and then ‘click’. Luckily it only ever happened on an empty chamber.

I decided I would never trust the trigger again, so disposed of it and replaced it. I appreciate that’s a bigger pain with a Jewell over a stock trigger but figured that unless the cause could be confidently determined and so rectified (which I didn’t think it could be) it was just too much of a risk.

Personally, I'd take the trigger off, soak in solvents then get an air line to blow out any crud, after that I'd be looking at adjustment screws, if none of that worked I'd contact Jewel to see what they suggest (might get a replacement) then I'd consider taking it to a gunsmith

Has any maintainence been carried out on the weapon and fire control been carried out in the last 12 years

“Occasionally fires when catch moved”

The first time that happened - personally I would have removed the weapon from use and stripped it down to determine the issue

If you are not capable of doing this - take it to someone who can

At best if you continue using the weapon in this state you run the risk of a ND into the ground or your self

At worst you run the risk of killing someone

Sorry to be blunt - but you cannot **** about with firearms

Had that with a Remy once, trigger was the issue. Not fun, and very dangerous, although, rifle should always be pointed in a safe direction when moving safety to off anyway of course.

Ronin has spoken wise words above, listen to that.

As above its your trigger, swap it or fix it

if its out of warranty may as well swap it out, a gunsmith will charge you the cost of a replacement to potentially fix it anyways
