Photo ID

It’s renewal time for my firearms certificate and of course part of the process is to provide a new photo.
I used an onlind service call id-photo and you can take the photo at home and they will send it to your home address. The part I missed is that you are automatically enrolled into a subscription of £40/month.
Of course I have cancelled as soon as the payment came out.
I hope the firearms department appreciates the photo in my application and this avoids anyone else on this site from being scammed.

My last few renewal photos were done at home simply by using a camera, downloading photo to laptop, and sending it with the application.
No third party service provider required.
Not sure why you would choose to use an online service when you probably have all the technology you need to do it yourself at your fingertips.

I used Max Spielman at my last renewal. It is so washed out on the certificate print it seems barely worth the effort! Next time I’ll just take a selfie against a white wall. IMG_1340.webp

Failing being able (or not being bothered) to do it yourself, in many towns you will find a photographic shop, selling framed pictures and offering to print out any dgital holiday snaps you want to bore people with. They will also do a side line in photos of you for the likes of passports, firearms certificates and so on. And they'll know all the rules so that the photos are acceptable. They'll give you hard copies and/or send them to your email address. I obviously don't know what they might charge elsewhere, but when I last did mine, it was only a few quid.

Wow! So young! Do you have to produce photo ID when buying beer at the local supermarket to prove you're over eighteen?
Funnily enough, I did get ID’d by a young girl when I was buying fireworks a couple of years ago. I had my three boys in tow and the only form of ID I had to hand was my FAC/SGC. When I presented it in the wallet she said “thank you officer.” 🤣

The lovely clerk at firearms licensing couldn’t believe I had three sons who shoot as I didn’t look old enough… so I had to stop shaving and now I look my full 40 years 😭

The loverly clerk at D & C, having received my photo, couldn't believe that I was still alive

If doing it yourself, as I did using a plain internal house wall and a mobile phone, try different times of the day.
Lighting and you want to be using natural light if possible, makes a significant difference. You don't want shadows either behind you, or one side of your face lighter than the other.

I took around x20 pics and revolved slightly on the spot, picked out the most neutral lighting wise and binned the rest.

It went straight through the system with no bother.

Many years ago I needed a picture so got my dear old Dad to take it....not sure what he pressed but the camera took a number of blocks of 30 pictures, bless he did try lol

The Timpsons counter in my local Sainsbury’s do passport pics & have a machine that’ll print photos from your phone 👍

In the old days it was a signed passport photo. What I could never fathom out is why the FEO couldn't sign the back of the photo at the interview.
I must say I have an ancient PC and found it quite difficult to take a picture on my phone and then transfer it to my desktop prior starting my FAC application.

I used the same method as VSS (#2) a few months ago for my FAC pic, namely taking a delayed-action snap on an ordinary camera to download to a laptop. Smartphones are for the masses, designed for those with the mentality of a child, and totally addictive, which are some of my reasons for not having one. I would guess that the OP doesn't have one either so good luck to him, he's worthy of respect. This makes most of the replies here irrelevant, but that's nothing new.:)

My renewal visit is in the next couple of days. Guy said he would take my photo while here. Better than trying to organise one myself. J
