Caught Today

Farmer said this morning, seen 5 magpies, I suppose I had better get the Larsen trap out then, I said, oh yes please he said.

Back doing Fenns in tunnels for squirrels with good success next to a feeder with wild bird seed . Will start Larsens next week . Rabbit cages out too getting a few each day for the rabbit pen . Enjoying myself to be honest.
All squirrels go into bait station for 🦊

How do you catch your call bird magpie?
In the past I've always got one from someone else.
I have tried the likes of making a nest of eggs in the otherwise unbaited Larson trap but not been successful.
Anecdotal evidence of how to tempt a magpie ( or carrion crow) into a Larson trap that doesn't contain a call bird would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I use the clam shells and make a nest and place close to a hedge
I think i have an element of luck - but put 15 ish out and usually catch a corvid of some form

Google them, you can buy them from a firm called "Trapman" or make your own.
Put the word out that you want a call bird, maybe go into your local gun shop and have a quiet word, they should know someone who will drop one off.
We all help each other out around here. Your to far away from me otherwise you'd be welcome to a crow or magpie.

Take 2 or 3 hens eggs, slightly crack one just exposing the contents onto a plant pot saucer or similar. Place on top of the trap, place the others unbroken into the pots. No need for any nest material.
I found this a reliable way of catching the first birds, In the days when it was legal here, in the Soviet, Socialist Republic of Wales.

Disguise the above trap by weaving dead grass through the mesh. I roughed mine up a bit and sprayed them dark green.
Post #19 is a ladder trap. Leave the top open and put a bit of carcass inside through the late winter, then close it up and put a good rabbit or hare in, and you should get lucky, they get used to feeding around the trap.
