Wanted: Cheap binoculars for newbie

Its amazing how a damaged eyecup approx- free or a few quid, escalates into replacement binos for a few hundred
I know right 🤣

I was after just a cheap set, but it’s the twist eye cup I need and that’ll do for him nothing wrong with the minox I’ve got for him, just annoying to use, I just don’t want my swaros getting dropped or whatever else 🤣

I would look for a decent second hand pair of older Zeiss 7x42 BGAT*P* or Swarovski or Leica.

With the latter if you go for the 7 or 8x32 or 36mm they are generally substantially cheaper than the 42mm objective lens, a lot lighter and compact and you loose very little in terms of light transmission and brightness.

The older bent tube porro prism binoculars - eg Swarovski Habicht are very simpler and cheaper to make and hence are much less at retail.

A second hand pair of these would be worth a look at.

I bought a pair of Vanguard 8x42 new about 8 years ago, on sale from £300 to £150. They are still going strong and I still use them for stalking. OK, not quite up to premium level performance but they are perfectly adequate even in low light. Very good value. I have a Kahles scope and there is not a huge amount between them. At least if I spot a deer through the binos at twilight the shot will be clearer.

Try Opticron - The current Discovery WA ED (either 8x42 or 10x42) are cracking for that money - you can get them new direct from Opticron UK for £229 or shop around to see if you can find them second hand. New, they come with a 5yr warranty. I have a pair of Opticron Countryman 10x42 about 20 years old and they're outstanding glass even still. (There's a pair on ebay at the time of writing for just under £150!!) Opticron are great to deal with if you ever need service work done.
