17hmr recommendations

I’m considering having a 17 HMR put on my ticket mainly for rabbit Shooting at night, I have been looking at the anschutz 1517 or the cz457. What is the better gun out of these two? The 1517 is the older model and therefore I would have to buy it secondhand. I presume the barrels are usually quite good in a 17HR and not prone to burning out? If not anschutz do a new model that I’m not as keen on but I would consider.
Finally, I have inputted the data on a ballistics chart and it’s showing me that if I zero at 125yards I should only have half inch either way out to 150yards. Does this seem about right? It seems pretty impressive hence the reason I’m thinking it will be a great tool for the bunnies.

Sorry I should of been clearer, I meant 1/2 drop, not 1/2 groups

I don't know what the current ammunition is like, but I had an CZ HMR a few years ago, and it was MONUMENTALLY SH*T.

It would not shoot the Hornady ammunition, well 4" at 100yds. It went back, I think to Edgar Brothers, who checked it over, re-crowned it, sent it back, and it was no better.

In the end the RFD refunded my money.

457 all day every day. You don't need a varmint barrel though!
New ammo is better. CCI made stuff has switched powder.
For trouble free service inspect the ammo prior to use for split necks and destroy them.

Hornady, Remington and some Federal are loaded by CCI. Winchester load their own.

Depending on your budget, Savage makes a great selection of 17 HMR rifles. Certainly not in the same class as the others mentioned here, but I can tell you from experience that they are very accurate. Idk what the price point is for Savage in the UK so maybe you wouldn’t save enough compared to CZ or Anschutz to make it worthwhile. But just throwing it out there that they are good shooters if you’re on a budget.

My vote would be a good condition (or new old stock) 455.

I’ve recently got one and it just feels right. I had a 1517 for years, super accurate with a good trigger but I’ve found anschutz steel a bit prone to rust. Stock is also very basic if you don’t have the thumb hole version.

I couldn’t get on with a 457 in 22LR I had. Nothing wrong with it but just didn’t like it.

T1X was very good in all respects other than the ejector, which was anaemic, with cases regularly falling back into the action and jamming it. They may have improved that, mine was one of the first.

For a few bucks more, you could consider an Anschutz 1727F, with the Fortner straight-pull action, in .17 HMR. They're fairly pricey here in Canada, but perhaps you do better in the UK. I've shot most of the available .17 HMR ammunition in mine, and it shoots it all pretty well. I can get repeatable 5-shot 100-yard groups of about .75"- .80" with mine and the Hornady ammunition with the 17-gr. V-Max bullet. Here's mine. Ignore the cat; she insists on being in pictures.

Your definition of a few bucks more must be a little more open ended than mine . But yeah that’s certainly the gold standard. Very expensive here in the USA but maybe not so much in the UK. I’ll likely be ordering an Anschutz 1761 left hand in 22LR with an extra barrel in 17HMR this year. I like the user changeable barrel feature of the 1761 and at least here in the states it’s less than half of a 1727 Fortner Action.

Can only speak of my T1x, not used any other HMR. Good little rifle, albeit does feel very small without some spacers and a cheek riser, bobbed mine into a T3x Super Varmint stock, and it improved the fit dramatically. Accuracy wise it's very good, only thing that ever lets it down is me.

Ammo, shooting Hornady 17gr vmax, as above check each box for any splits. So far found none !
