17HMR split cases

Remington HMR are made by CCI and can still have cracked necks. New production may have the new powder. I have experienced squibs with very old Remington ammo.

They may be made in the same factory, but the much better finish of the brass, the lack of split necks and deformities out of the box, and the smell of the burnt powder suggest they are not the same product! Our gamekeeper also uses Remington A/Tips - far more than me - and he also hasn't seen or experienced any quality issues in recent years.

Interesting, I've not noticed anything different brass quality wise. It certainly is possible the powder is to Remington spec but all I know is that with old Remington and just like other brands I had squibs.

I very much hope it's a thing of the past just like how I am experiencing with Hornady branded ammunition.

I got fed up with split cases a good few years back and swapped it for a .22 K-Hornet. Far more fun and much more capable/versatile.
I remember unchamering a round to climb a fence and having to go home early as the bullet stayed in the barrel. I didn't have a rod with me. Thinking back, that was probably down to lack of neck tension caused by a split case.

I solved the problem years ago. Sold the HMR and had a 17 rem Instead,.it killed the same but just allot faster and further.
😉

So I decided this week I’ve had enough of Hornady VMax 17gr 17HMR after some recent unexplained misses, jam or two and routine rabbit head shots hitting low and blowing guts out, I checked zero, 3 shots bang on from bipod, 3 shots from sticks 2 spot on 1 flier, case didnt eject, so I checked the case, it was split, checked remaining unfired ammo found 6 split from about 30 and found 9 split in a new box. Doing a bit of an experiment and finding these split rounds always produced outliers 3 inch or so low and to 2in either side from zero at 100yd. (CZ455, mounts are tight, scope mounted correctly, bore cleaned every 100 rounds, and the last 200 rounds fired without issue)
So I thought I’d change to Winchester 20gr HPs and see if they’re any better. 24 out of 50 have split cases brand new out the box, is this a common problem with all brands? Or just USA made? Any recommendations for ammo that isnt crap?
All brands, sack it off and get a .22WMR, in semi auto if you fancy it….

Please be careful mate - i think i am the most careful in the world tbh - but i had a head / bullet whatever you want to call it come off and lodge in the barrel - i did not realise and shot again
The result luckily was a knackered gun - ringing ears and shock ! It could have been so much worse !

Nasty ... I had the first part 10 or so years ago when I got a new Annie 1517. I was zeroing it and maybe the second shot or so didnt sound right. Unloaded and checked down the barrel and could see light...If I hadnt noticed it would have been a lot worse (like you had) .

These are from last night, all Hornady 17g

It didn't stop any of them ejecting or create any misses so I'll just live with it.

Cases that split during firing do not seem to affect accuracy or performance. I have had lots like that.

But...cartridges that are already split before chambering have produced some random fliers at a rate of about 1-in-5 in my experience.

As explained to me, the issue is that the split cartridge can allow the propellent to absorb moisture leading to unpredictable combustion.

Split cases seem to be batch-specific per previous thread.
