17HMR split cases

It's not crap anymore, it's serviceable now. Mines not going anywhere.
Sounds like it’s the same as it always was, having check every round for split necks before you go out. Not for me, I’d say that was not fit for purpose.

I’ll stick with the WMR and .223…….

No mate. There is no longer a need to check any more. I did an item on it a few months ago. The new powder lights up easier than the old.
My last testing didn't reveal any difference in zero either between split and I split. All shot with the same impetus and no squibs.
They had to many claims made against them! Had to pull their finger out!!

Fair enough, I’ll still stick with the WMR in semi auto and .223 for longer shots as I’m loading that cheaper than I can buy 17 HMR.

Please be careful mate - i think i am the most careful in the world tbh - but i had a head / bullet whatever you want to call it come off and lodge in the barrel - i did not realise and shot again
The result luckily was a knackered gun - ringing ears and shock ! It could have been so much worse !
First shot on game with my HMR resulted in a bullet lodged in the barrel, that and several hang fires over the following months convinced me it was a pile of crap. Shame, as when it works it’s a cracking little calibre.

Totally mate - during covid mine shot so many squirrels - i loved it like a laser - but i was very very lucky in the end - so sadly never again

Pity the .17 hornet is virtually unavailable either second hand or new as I have never regretted parting with my hmr for the hornet.

Be careful - you only need one to ruin an otherwise pleasant day !
I agree, I have shot lots of com bloc surplus ammo and one fine day a CZ 52 with polish ammunition blew the case and that continued down the magazine and finally out of the pistol. No harm to me or the gun. I have also had Korean surplus blow cases in .30M2 Ball one of those wrecked the extractor on the US1917 rifle the other cracked the stock on my M-1 Garand no damage to myself, had I not worn safety glasses I would probably lost my right eye.

Thousands of shots later in 17hmr I am still looking for spilt cases found none.
Some years ago, I spoke to a rep from Hornady who said part of the trouble with the 17HMR cases splitting in this country was the fact that they had travelled long distances, and the vibration caused problems. This always sounded a bit odd to me, but could NP435 let us know if there have been many split case problems in the USA?

Nonsense.
The thin brass gets work hardened by the rapid machinery, there is no possible way to anneal the case mouth due to the primer.
The old powder relied on the crimped bullet for good ignition. If and it did, the thin work hardened brass cracked the crimp no longer worked resulting in iffy ignition and totally randomly.
The new powder seems to circumnavigate the problem of work hardened brass.

I really don't know nationwide none of my friends have had the problem and having avoided most of the USA based shooting forums I could very well be uninformed.
The nonsense about shipping distance and vibration is disturbing coming from a manufacturer. My stuff gets plenty of vibration riding about in my CJ7. The only other ammo I got hundreds of split necks in was Turkish 7.92x57 dated from the early 30s, no damage to my body or the Mauser.

So I did some research split 17hmr seems to be well known over here those who want to look check some of the Rimfire forums
