.220 Swift for Muntjac and CWD

Jim Carmichael was responsible for my x4 220 swifts and where it really started for me having read what I call the bible his 1975 book the modern rifle. Did not want to reload or chase serious accuracy just shoot fox’s as far away from me as possible so it made sense as using a 22 hornet ( loved it).
Accuracy in my terms never failed in any and did manage to acquire a bulge close to the muzzle on one I think due to snow but not sure🤣

Jim Carmichael wrote an article for Outdoor Life back in the 90’s I think about a Shilen DGR rifle he had in 220 Swift . He kept a log book and at the time he’d put over 7000 rounds thru the gun mostly shooting prairie dogs that kinda thing so suffice to say they were all screamers . He said when he first got the gun it was a consistent 1/10-2/10 grouper at 100 for 5 . At the time of the article the gun was still under 1/2” at 100 for 5 . He removed the barrel and slabbed the side at the chamber throat area . It looked like alligator skin for about 4 1/2” and it still shot well but he wanted a new barrel . Moral of the story - use a little common sense and any so called barrel burner will far exceed what self proclaimed negative experts claim .
Indeed sir you are correct. My CZ 550 22-250 has 4800 down the tube and if I do my part sub half inch for 5 at 100.

Just bought a .222 myself 👍🏻

Anschutz 1740, and it seems to have been hardly used as well
Attaboy! God’s own calibre and with the accuracy to prove it.
Sierra 55gns for Roe are splendid and 50 gns Vmax will drop foxes in their tracks at silly distances. Our friends in the Southern Hemisphere can attest to the triple deuce’s effectiveness on much larger quarry too.

Think if you hit anything behind the lug with 50gns in the uk including most things in zoos up to 200 yards it would work well. The ancient text the modern rifle confirms the 222 for doing the lords work and am indeed a disciple.

Bless you my son….

It's something to consider certainly, I often wonder if it's something that was more prevalent in the early days of the Swift when metallurgy was not as advanced as it is today and also style of shooting, for example rapid succession of shots without allowing the rifle to cool in-between.
Barrel life on a swift is no different to the 22.250 I have had both and no difference in life of the barrel

Carmichael was the one that got me started keeping a log book on any rifle . I did on a couple Grendel’s I had . But at present I keep logs of the 26 Nosler and the 6.5 Sherman Short Magnum . Neither have made it to 200 shots . I have a Sako HB 6 PPC and a 700 BDL Varmint Special 222 I’d have liked to kept records on but both were used when acquired . The two I keep I put brand new Shilen stainless barrels . Oh yeah I also keep a log of my 6mm-06 that one has a Hawk Ridge stainless barrel , if memory serves it’s been fired maybe 70 times . Log books don’t save the throat but a person that keeps one I think tends to take throat issues into consideration before they become an issue .

The circa 1960 Winchester Model 70 Varmint I had was well used when I got it and about thirty years old . It came from the factory with a stainless HB it’s my under standing that all the Model 70 Swifts had stainless barrels but that may be incorrect . IMHO I think throat erosion came from the old guys not cleaning and or let cool enough . My own procedure at the bench is arrive with a clean barrel shoot a fouler then two five shot groups not fired quickly . Then clean fire the fouler and let cool two groups repeat . Some say overclean but I’d rather clean to much than not enough and besides it’s my frickin rifle so I’ll do as I see fit . Now for what it’s worth I follow the same cleaning procedure for any 22 centerfire when at the bench .

Barnes 50gr TTSX (copper) with plastic tips removed in a 1:14" twist barrel.

How do you find them, accuracy wise and meat damage. I use the Sierra 55g soft point and it’s very accurate and drops roe very well but you can lose the odd front end. Inevitable, I know. Though of trying copper to see if it made a difference, quite a few on here seem to think so. This is in a 22/250 running the Sierra at 3680 fps. That’s where the accuracy is in my rifle, I wasn’t chasing speed.

They're accurate and they do a fair bit of damage but I don't feel that it's excessive. I shoot them at 3650fps from my short barrel but could push it to maybe 3800 with a different powder. I'll maybe take some pics of roe buck carcasses when I butcher next week.

Here's more info too: Barnes 50gr TTSX dimensions - 223, 22-250, 220 Swift

Champion, thank you very much.

Sorry folks for the derail

Try sierra 1390 55gn. Does not leave lots of damage, just a fairly clean exit wound and they tend to drop where shot
