.222 - Sako A1 1:14 twist or S&L Legacy 1:10 twist

Further to my wanted ad for a .222, I had pretty much decided on purchasing a Sako A1 with the ultimate plan to having it tidied up, re blued, and restocked in a very good walnut stock, and to create a special little roe rifle.

At the moment, I've no need for it to be non-lead friendly, so will be using 50gn lead bullets. However, I can see this change coming down the line on certain bits I shoot, so the only niggle at the back of my mind is the 1:14 twist. There are plenty of threads which touch on non-lead .222 rounds for a 1:14 twist barrel, and it is not to say there aren't solution, but it sounds like the options are fairly limited (and I'm not going to hold my breath for the govt to reduce min bullet weights to 40/45gn to acknowledge the switch to non-lead).

Be interested to get thoughts on whether to just crack on with the A1 and worst comes to worse re-barrel, or just grab a S&L now and not worry about it.

I bought a new tikka .222, tested some lead free to good effect (lapua actually load factory lead free naturalis which I’ve yet to try that they say will stabilise in a 1:14) then went back to shooting 55grn nosler. The sako is a lovely little rifle but it sounds like you’ve answered your own question. Maybe best to go with the s&l. They are beautiful after all.

In that case, I would make sure your S&L has the newer trigger that has the trigger blade position back in the guard.
The first ones came with a trigger in the middle of guard... looked strange.

Get the S&L - apart from the fact they are great rifles they tighter twist will be handy as and when we get copper ammo forced on us
