.222 Stutzen

I'm toying with the idea of starting to search for a .222 Stutzen for close woodland stalking . . .

I think the cartridge would complement my 25-06 in the rifle safe since I sold my HMR and .223

Anyone got any observations on the stutzen style of rifle, good or bad ?

I have never shot one, but really like the look of them.

Any advice well received.

A friend has a CZ 222 Stuzen its a nice little rifle. Not so easy to moderate but probably is one of the mildest report centre fire cartridges. Neat little action and no problem with Roe deer, foxes etc.

I also have a 223 and cant see much difference between the two.

Cheers

i have an older stutzen and love it they are a joy to shoot and carry they balance very well on the shoulder its my go to rifle but its in 270 ,atb wayne

I too, like the look of them and have owned a few in the past, a Krikko 243 [one being advertised here at the mo] being my favourite and a Mannlicher 222 has always been on the wish list.

However a FC issue BSA CF2 [270w], put me off forever, woodwork like a Bananna!!!!!!!

So, yes, Stutzens are fine as long as the wood quality and fit is 100% and you aren't subjecting the rifle to daily down pours!

A good pal has a Mannlicher Schoener [butter knife handle] 270, lovely rifle

I have no intention of moderating it mate, would just fit it with a 6-42 S+B, Swarovski or something along those lines. No bipod, just a sling to keep things light and simple.

Nice little rifles and can certainly see the merit of one myself. You might if you are lucky find an old Mannlicher in 222 - I think they made them, but there are also a good number still around in the 6.5x54 - accurate and light recoil and with lighter bullets, enough velocity to be deer legal. I have shot these, albeit not in anger at live quarry - very nice shooting and very nice to carry.

The CZ is a nice little rifle and now that they make them left handed might even go for one myself sometime. 6x42 scope may even be too big - ideal would be the old Zeiss 3-9x36.

In his book "Accurate Rifles" Craig Boddington recounts how he got his fullstock manllicher to really shoot well by putting positive upward pressure between the stock and barrel about halway along the barrel, by simply putting a couple of business cards under the barrel.

I have a Steyr Mannlicher stutzen in 7mm-08 on order, expecting it in January. I tried lots of rifles and the Steyr just felt better than anything else, beautiful handling and great balance. I'm not going to give it a hard life, so I thought I'd choose a rifle that will be a joy to use when I do so.

I've just bought a Krico stutzen in .308. Lovely fast handling rifle, that comes naturally to the shoulder. I'm really looking forward to using it.

Have mannlicher stutzen in .308. Actually went to look at a different rifle but the mannlicher caught my eye and when i handled it i just had to have it. My only reservation was i had heard they could be a bit dodgy on accuracy.Fortunately mine is a lovely gun to shoot and the one i reach for first. It wont have too hard a life.If you could only have one gun thats the one i would keep.Hope this helps

I've owned a trio of Sako's with factory mannlicher stocks over the years !

Two of them were Triple Deuce and the third was a 22-250 . All were what is referred to in this country as "Garcia Guns" .Meaning thats who imported them making them mid 60's to mid 70's guns I believe . One of the 222's had a 24" barrel which I never cared for . The other 222 and the 22-250 had what i consider a more managable 20" pipe . Although all three shot nicely for mannlicher stocked guns .

Couple years back I had a Ruger 77RSI tang safety gun in 308 WIN . This gun was no tack driver but it was a consistent 1 1/2" for 3 shots at 100 yards which is plenty good enough for deer where I mostly hunt . The gun however did have a not over friendly trigger . it was quite inconsistent being 2 1/2 pounds today and maybe 4 pounds an hour later . I changed the sear in it to a RifleBasix aftermarket and it had a consisitent 1 3/4 pound pull that was crisp . Not a good cold weather trigger by any means but it was better .

Let's see Mauser (proper Mauser Obendorf that is ;)), Heym, Krico, Sauer, Mannlicher all made "Stutzen" i.e full stocked rifles meant for woodland stalking. As mentioned Ruger still does in certain models I believe as does CZ and Zastava. And companies like Kettners also offer them along with Frankonia who have the built to their specifications.

Brno guns also offer this option I recall.

Have fun deciding on which one to get :D.

I would have gone for the CZ at an unbeatable price if they'd made it in 7mm-08, but they didn't. Which "forced" me to buy the much nicer Steyr. Oh dear, those devious Czechs...

Don't worry Six Point, I'll post some pics when I have it, but it will be a while yet. It will also be modelling JasonH's bespoke matching leather accessories (bullet pouch, bolt holster, sling). Nice.
