.22lr semi auto - avoid?

i wanted another semi auto but wanted something short as its mainly a truck gun, had a 10/22 before, maybe i had a bad one but it put me off getting another,
found a cheap an cheerful g22, tried a few different makes of ammo and since i found some its happy with its been faultless..........it is a bit fiddly to strip/clean tho

Cool

i had 2 10/22 over the years and the first went back to the shop, the second one ( i never learnt my lesson) it was chopped up by a gunsmith in front of me,

only fit for the bin or emptying you bank balance and will still shoot like sh**

would not use on as a tyre iron never mind call it a gun?

bob.

10/22 or the more rifle like 77/22 are enjoyed by hundreds of thousands worldwide including myself but if Bob says they're tosh we must all be wrong....

I bought a Remington 552 Speedmaster for £20 plus commision at Scotarms auction.
Shoots anything reliably and accurate enough for my postal league comps
I have had a 10/22 once - worked on it a bit but still couldn't get on with it!

If you want an accurate, reliable semi .22 that shoots most if not all ammo and needs minimal cleaning get a CZ511 subsonic.

If you want a bit more grunt get a Brno 611 in .22 WMR, brilliant truck gun!

Well I own 4 Ruger 10/22’s currently.

If you are planning on buying one new to shoot as a factory gun then you will never be happy. You will develop a little bicep in the crook of your trigger finger!

They will shoot standard velocity reliably but may not cycle subsonics. That’s an issue for the bunny basher elite. Personally none of my rabbits will come within 100 meters now so I use a .17 HMR and that’s not subsonic anyway.

I have a regular cleaning regime. They get stripped every thousand rounds or so. My oldest 10/22 has shot over 50,000 rounds.

Ruger 10/22 is like a Land Rover you can buy every part aftermarket and customise to suit you. If you buy a high mileage 20 year old Landrover that’s been tinkered with by someone who doesn’t know what they are doing you can expect to buy a few parts to put it back right.

Just like a Landrover someone, after you, always buy it. Not true of that Walther! You cannot give the G22 away.

The 4th is just about to get tricked out for my 14 year old. It will get a trigger job, I will convert it to Auto Bolt Release and have bought a extended mag release/Bolt hold open. Total cost £25, it will then get dropped into a candy pink Tapco stock.

For a brief period of time I did have the target tactical model with it's bx trigger and short 16" varmint style barrel,

The 10/22 would offer you the most customisation ever to get it to how you want it or you could just get a used rimfire magic custom 10/22
with all the trimmings and bits done already, from what has been said already they do get finnicky with the subsonics but from what I know and heard
they prefer the winnie subs or cci ones as they have the extra poke over the eley subs or lapua/sk ones.

The alternative and by far best choice factory non customisable one is the CZ 512 I believe edgars now can get the american version in with
the better stock than the standard beech offering, I believe the cz's 512 semi autos are far easier to take apart and clean than the 10/22's.

Not such a popular choice on this forum however I cannot fault my M&P 15-22. It will cycle subs all day (RWS, Winchester etc) and standard velocity (I use CCI AR Tactical mainly as it’s good value for plinking) but it really likes RWS Semi-Auto.

Everything its been fed it has cycled with round count now pushing 5,000 - I guess in that time I’ve had a handful of stovepipes but no jams, no light strikes and just the odd FTF you get with rimfire ammunition from time to time.

With all the above ammunition it’ll return 1/2” @ 50 quite happily.

Is it as accurate as my Anschutz 1417? No... Is it good fun? Yes... great at paper / practical and has accounted for a good number of rabbits too (although the slap of the bolt is loud when using moderated sub-sonics).

As I mentioned before, people either love or hate the AR .22LR platform, however, I won’t be getting rid of mine and you hardly ever see any 2nd hand. I really never have heard anything good about the 10-22 - the CZ semi-autos are decent though with the .22WMR being the best, I’m told.

My ISSC MkII "SKAR" clone is a super rifle. Match grade barrel and built like a tank. I have never scoped mine but on a AR500 steel plate at 25M I can empty 22 rounds of CCI 40grain HV into a 2 inch circle off hand, and so fast that almost frightening to onlookers. It is a very accurate rifle but. unfortunately, turned into a straight pull repeater if fed subs.~Muir

I've had 2 Ruger 10/22s and still own the second. They are cheap and cheerful. Not particularly accurate unless you spend a great deal of money and replace nearly everything on or in the gun. Still my favourite semi auto.
I've owned a Gevarm and was astounded by claims here that it was accurate. It fires from an open bolt and has no firing pin or extractor. Massive heavy bolt that slams forward upsetting the aim. Same principle as a Sten Gun. My mates would occasionally empty the whole magazine in 1 second, much to his and the rabbits surprise. Ultra reliable but rough as.
I have shot Berettas, Brownings and Uniques they are made very well but are hard to get.
I'd go Anschutz or CZ.

Had 2 10/22s , one standard not modified, absolute pain in the arse, then i bought a heavily customized one which was fantastic, but it would still play up, usually when it really mattered, since sold it and went back to the trusty CZ452 that sat spare for years, if i was out to buy another, it would be another CZ although my preference would be Anschutz, a friends got one, and its perfect IMHO.

Good Luck

Chris

I bought a 10/22.
Had a chat on here about it- not always extracting, powder residue, so-so accuracy
Muir id'd as a deluxe mod- no barrel band- and advised I forget about subs.
Followed that advice and now only use standard ammo.
Accuracy at 50 yards is acceptable (not with Eley- shotgun grouping) if I use CCI and now it does what I bought it for

Baught a second hand 10/22 and 500 rounds of Ely Subs stuck an arc angle stock on it and never looked back.

The trigger must have been tweeked by the previous owner as its fine.

Don't remember ever having a jam and I could bash a 3/4" hole in paper at 50m consistently and managed to keep below 1.5" at 75

Cleaned the action when it sounded gritty and it was all great.

Recently bought another 500 brick of Ely subs and suddenly I am getting 4" groupings and minimum 2 out of 10 rounds jams

Had I had that block of Ammo first off id have thrown my 10/22 in the bin. I even took it to a gunsmith to check out but in the end putting cheep CCI Subs through it got me back to sub 1" at 50 instantly

SO you could say its amo fussy but TBH every rifle I own has a preference and some (like my 308 Tikka T3) will seriously reject some brands. Like 1/2 grouping with Sako Hammer Heads and with the same zero, 4" groupings with PPU

I have considered a bolt action LH Anshalts as I read good things but for the majority of my .22 shooting the advantages of a rapid second shot make it the go to unit

For now I just need to get a batch of Ely Subs that's as good as my first batch :(

CCI and Winchester sub-sonics seem to have a little bit more oomph, but not every one is, in fact, sub-sonic.

I have a BRNO .22LR. Works well with Eley Subsonic Hollowpoints. Try pick one of them up. Plenty out there. Ah, might even sell mine if interested:):)

gosh i must be really unlucky as my 10-22 is accurate enough for rabbits out to 80 yards and has taken a lot of foxes as well. It keeps shooting up to the 400 rnd count before cleaning.
i ditched the barrel band and added a recoil buffer and a mag extension and altered the bolt release total cost of £20 .
i acquired a second hand hogue stock for it later. my rifle is over 22yr old and has had over 50,000 subs through it just drop a bore snake down it every 400 round or so and it just keeps ticking

Love it.~Muir

The 17 series Anschutz rifles are about as good as it gets! I have little doubt that this too would be a brilliant rifle, but it should be at around £2500!!!

I see they do a 17HMR version too, that would be amazing but for one thing, what would happen if you have one of the "dodgy" rounds? I guess one of these wouldn't cycle the action, but with a semi that could be a bit of a worry to say the least.
