22lr Subsonic Ammo Problems

Aguilla from Mexico smells really odd too. Do you guys get Aguilla over there? Seems to shoot ok. They have a Super low powered load called Colebri. ( humming bird).

Years ago Aguilla was in steady supply over here but now it turns up infrequently. I can't even tell you who the importer is these days or even if there is one. It used to be the cheapest .22lr ammo you could buy but some of it was actually very good and belied the price you paid for it.

I had to buy a few hundred of those 42gr Winchesters never happy with the grouping and looking at the bullet itself each had flat spots or slight dinks or non uniform hollow point cavity. Not sure of the advantage of the extra weight in .22lr, the 38 eleys never let me down yet and visibly a lot more uniform.

This might interest you in regards to speed testing videos I made using both the CZ452 and the CZ455

I find this quite interesting. Having bought a .22 last year, I tried those 5 brands of ammunition. In a very statistically insignificant test one afternoon of one 10-round group of each, I found the Remington to group best and I continued to use it. However, I had instances of both very underpowered and overpowered rounds compared to the, usually consistent, average. I even had one fail to kill a head-shot rabbit at about 125yds. I have found the CCI to be most consistent and it is all I use now.

I used to have a choice of two brands one was Remington the other Eley.
I gave up with the Remington far too many inconsistent rounds.

Digging this subject up i know but just had to take 400 rounds of CCI subs back to the shop. Every 5th or 6th round went off like a cracker and landed 4" higher than the rest of the group at 75 yds!
Gone over to RWS hp subs field line, So much quieter and very accurate. I'll be sticking with them.

They're going trans-sonic. Essentially tickling the sound barrier. It grinds my gears that some ring out like high velocities for exactly the same reason. Seems that the American made stuff is slightly hotter than stuff over here. I usually go with Eleys when shooting in sensitive areas around cattle/horses. Unfortunately, I don't think there much you can do about it except buy slower ammo. I really want to get my hands on some of that CCI QUIET Segmented stuff but can find it anywhere.

What's the point of buying subsonic ammo when it shoots like high velocity. I've also noticed the ones that ring out being less accurate, they're usually flyers that can go anywhere. Probably to do with the concussive force of the bullet flirting with the sound barrier making it unstable.

Out of curiosity, what's the muzzle report like between the RWS and Eleys? (Assuming you're using a mod)

I've shot both, they're pretty much the same. I steer clear of those Winchesters as I had the exact same problem. That and sometimes they gummed up the chamber and wouldn't extract.

My CZ455 use to stack Eleys into one hole. My new Tikka not so much. Although it is fairly new with less than 300 rounds through it. Norma subs are pretty good too!

Hmm. Interesting to see the velocity figures.

What type / model CCI may I ask? I am 2 bricks into the CCI-56 and having good results all round out of a Sako quad.

I folks, I'm new here, but registered as this thread seems relevant to the issue I'm having.

I'm new to .22LR, I normally play with .223, but I now have a CZ 457 LRP. I have tried Eley, RWS and CCI. In terms of grouping at my zero (66) I've found the CCI to be the most consistent BUT they are loud, and almost all supersonic. I've just fired ten rounds and measureed on my Caldwell chrono (the only chrono I have access to):

1186
1111
1141
1137
1144
1128
1146
1130
1136
1112
1137

Does this seem normal? I've also tried some RWS HP subs, and whilst they remained subsonic, the grouping could have been better.

Many thanks

Jim

Quiet,,, then use the Norma. I am using up my Winnie’s then moving over as they are great.
Good to hear these are good as I've just finished off the last of the 40 grain Winnies I had and bought a brick of the Norma on recommendation from the RFD but I'm yet to try them.
