I've got a 595 in .308 and just added a Sako 75 in .243.
There aren't any new rifles in my price range which feel as nice as these, so I chose to take my time and wait for the right S/H example to turn up. New Tikka and Sakos might shoot just as well but they don't look or feel as good and they don't look as well built so I paid my money and took my choice.
Both shoot equally well. Can't split them. I slightly prefer the feel of the action on the Tikka but the Sako has a better quality steel magazine and steel mag well.
If I was buying another calibre for the long term I'd bide my time and buy either of these models again. There are still good ones out there, you just have to be patient.
I did notice that there were more nice quality Sako 75s in Scotland, especially in .243. Might have been just coincidence or maybe there are more gentlemen stalker's rifles on the market north of the border which haven't had the hammering on vermin the way many do in England. Either way, if looking for a good 595 or 75 its definitely worth searching through dealers nationwide and being prepared to take a punt on a shipped rifle and paying a transfer fee.
I bought my Sako from Neil Sutherland in Kilmarnock. He had three in stock and picked out what was in his opinion the best one and sent me stacks of photos before shipping. What turned up was a beautiful mint rifle with sharp chequering and not a mark on the bolt or the bolt race. I got a virtually new rifle for a grand, including Optilocks. I cannot think of a current rifle in production of that quality which could be had for the same money.
Neil's service, I must say, was exemplary. Next time I'm looking for a rifle I'd have no hesitation in checking out his stock and trusting his judgement if buying unseen. He definitely gets my recommendation.
