243 Rifle Options?

Funny, 4 years on from the starting of this thread I find myself asking the same questions!

Still undecided myself and really not sure what to get as my first (and only I hope) .243

Any updated views on this?

Hi,

I have a Tikka T3 SV in .243 and love it.

A great out of the box rifle, the only adjustment was to the trigger.

Shoots a clover leaf group (95gn SST's) at 100 yards.

Cant fault it.

Jeff

I suspect that the answers are still the same unless there's an extra '0' on the budget.

I had a 595 about 4 years ago, then I P/X it for a T3 (bit of a mistake as the 595 is/was lovely)I now I have a Sauer 404 in .308 and a Sauer 202 in .243. Sauers are nice and handy, pretty well made and you can spec them out to make them look fancy or you can go the other way and get them in a synth stock right from the factory, same deal as Blaser really.

Browning X Bolt - just as accurate and reliable as the T3 but with a nice "soft touch" stalk that doesn't feel like its make of Tupperware.

To go back to the car analogy Browning is a VW to Tikka's Skoda

I think you'll find that the correct analogy is that the T3 is a Ford Focus to anyone's anything. I speak of the proud owner of one and the regretful previous owner of the other (regretful because I wish I'd bever sold it).

I've got a 595 in .308 and just added a Sako 75 in .243.
There aren't any new rifles in my price range which feel as nice as these, so I chose to take my time and wait for the right S/H example to turn up. New Tikka and Sakos might shoot just as well but they don't look or feel as good and they don't look as well built so I paid my money and took my choice.
Both shoot equally well. Can't split them. I slightly prefer the feel of the action on the Tikka but the Sako has a better quality steel magazine and steel mag well.
If I was buying another calibre for the long term I'd bide my time and buy either of these models again. There are still good ones out there, you just have to be patient.
I did notice that there were more nice quality Sako 75s in Scotland, especially in .243. Might have been just coincidence or maybe there are more gentlemen stalker's rifles on the market north of the border which haven't had the hammering on vermin the way many do in England. Either way, if looking for a good 595 or 75 its definitely worth searching through dealers nationwide and being prepared to take a punt on a shipped rifle and paying a transfer fee.
I bought my Sako from Neil Sutherland in Kilmarnock. He had three in stock and picked out what was in his opinion the best one and sent me stacks of photos before shipping. What turned up was a beautiful mint rifle with sharp chequering and not a mark on the bolt or the bolt race. I got a virtually new rifle for a grand, including Optilocks. I cannot think of a current rifle in production of that quality which could be had for the same money.
Neil's service, I must say, was exemplary. Next time I'm looking for a rifle I'd have no hesitation in checking out his stock and trusting his judgement if buying unseen. He definitely gets my recommendation.
