.25-06 bullet choice

Hi all,

Just waiting for a variation to come through for a .25-06 and wanted to ask what factory ammo users were having good experiences with.

Will be my go to for all uk deer species. Any advice welcome.

Before I started hand loading I used Federal Premium 117gn and for the most part they were fine. Used that for years.
Now that I’m hand loading I use Yew Tree 102gn copper and that has taken everything from muntjac to large red stags.

1 to avoid-
I wouldn’t bother with factory Remington core lokt, all over the target when I tried a box. That’s with a rifle that shoots pretty much everything well.

Not much help unfortunately as I used to reload for my 25-06 but, had super loads for Berger 115gn and Barnes 100gn. Maybe it’s a nudge for you to start reloading ?!

I always had good luck with the Sako gameheads 117gr but also used the ppu 100gr as a backup. Reloading is great for the 25 as you can get some really good bullets which you won’t find in the factory offerings

Thank you all for the input, I’ll try and get hold of both 100gr and 117gr and see which the rifle likes best. I’m a fan of a faster flatter bullet and both should fit the mould.
I know the downside can be carcass damage but I like the knock down effect.

Maybe I’ll have to look down the reloading avenue too, especially as it’s a less common calibre for ammo off the shelf.

Has anyone tried copper/non lead yet?

Out of interest what was your load for Barnes 100grn, mine won’t group them for love nor money and have c.80 100gn ttsx heads

Run 80 grain Barnes ttsx to great effect on roe and fox. Trying to work a load up for the 100grn ttsx currently but struggling for grouping with N160

I had 25 years shooting 25-06 initially with a Steyr Mannlicher Classic & latterly with my Blaser K95 - 100gn Sierra 'Pro-Hunter' SP's were good but I found 110gn Nosler Accubond the best for everything in the UK.
However - I roll my own loads - always have done!

Deeply in love with my PPU 25-06 100grain psp. I use them for everything up to Fallow. Hell of a whack. Some good older ammo around at unbelievably sharp prices still.
