270 or 308

Hello,
I’m after a rifle/calibre so shooting red deer, currently got a 243 with a permanent thermal on it. I’m either going 270 or 308 I’m wondering what’s best ? Hopefully not opening a can of worms.

My reply was brief as was that of VSS. The point being made is that both are up to the job. There will be people on here who will swear by different rifles/ calibres and they will justify they're reasons for it. Now whether this will help you decide I don't know but either way you will be okay.

.270 why hover in the middle ground as its a flatter shooting round than the 308! . The 308 has flight line of artillery lobbing round but both will do the job and 7.62/308 is all over the world in every shop of cave.
My choice 130/150 .270 soft as butter to shoot after having use both for many years.

Same with my .243 so I bought a Rem 700 in .270 then both .30cal cans in 1/2" unf fitted as the barrel OD profile was the same. I took the T8 off the .243 and checked it fitted as some people have no clue what thread is on the end lol

The myth that the .270 is a laser beam while the .308 is a mortar is just that - a myth. The difference in drop at standard stalking ranges is smaller than most people can hold.

This is what I posted on a similar thread a while back:
If you want to have fun out of owning the rifle, even when you're not using it, then definitely go 270.

If you post on here that you own a 308, responses will be along the line of "oh, so what?" and a non-committal shrug of the shoulders (a bit like admitting that you play the banjo).

However, confess to owning a 270 and you'll be greeted with roars of laughter, a load of leg pulling and lots of lively, good natured banter will ensue (particularly if you confess to not having a moderator).

I have both. I have no real preference and have shot muntie to red with both. It’s more about getting the right platform for what you’re going to use it for combined with an appropriate optic that will make the difference regardless of calibre. My 270 is 22 inch barrel with grs stock and heavy mod and dialling scope and my 308 has a short barrel light mod and scope. The 270 good for gongs and on the hill and I like the 308 for woodland and lowland stalking but this is as much to do with the geometry, weight sights etc as the calibre.

Deffo .270 over Throw and wait mate. :tiphat:

If you mean reds on the hill - so longer shots .270 but it’s a marginal call

If you buy factory ammo and especially if you have or are going non lead then .308 will have greater availability and choice

Both great calibres for reds
