Thoughts on 6.5prc

I cant see how a bigger cartridge would benefit roe deer hunting, both 243w and 308w work well for roe, you can find ammo in most places. 6,5 prc have more recoil more expensive ammo, one or two rounds less in your rifle. For bigger animals on open hill its a different thing.

Not all loads are destructive in the prc. In a couple of clients rifles recently we chronographed 143gr Hornady factory ammunition at 2730fps. Thats 100fps Slower than my creedmoor home loads. Yes it can be loaded hot on the top end but don’t just assume that because its a prc that it’s going to be fast
Bloody hell that’s slow!

Was that factory ammo? What length barrel?

Though thinking about it, that makes sense.

My Creedmoor gets 2550 with factory ammo from a 20” barrel. That’s 200 fps slower than box speed. So if factory box speed is 2900 for a PRC, the 2700 is about right.

When I first got my PRC, factory ammo gave me 2910. But it’s declined recently, and I now only get 2800 or so.

That's absolutely shocking velocity. My 143g eldx factory were just sub 3kfps and accurate as any of my home loads (genuinely quater of an inch) to the point I've attempted to replicate them. Im sure @finnbear270 was the same but stuck with factory
In the beginning (2021) the factory ammo was just amazing. Really good, consistent speed and astonishing accuracy.

It has definitely dropped off, both in speed and accuracy. It’s really very mediocre now.

I first noticed it about 18 months ago, and it’s got steadily worse.

I really rated my 6.5PRC although I would say it is probably a bit much for a mainly roe rifle unless you only head/neck shoot. Might be ok with copper, I only ever used lead. Replaced mine with a rem mag as I just think the bigger frontal diameter kills Sika better. Otherwise would have kept it, such an easy cartridge to shoot confidently.

I have a 6.5-284 which is as near as you can get to a 6.5 prc. I really rate it. It's accurate. The bullets have a high bc so they buck the wind well. It kills well. It's easy to shoot. Little recoil. If I ever have to replace the 6.5-284 it will probably be a 6.5prc

Did you consider a 7 PRC?

As someone said "if you have the itch...", but I think .308 is underestimated for roe and red - all I ever used it on using 150 gr SP. I had a remarkably good "bang flop" consistency and good carcase experience, and if I was to add a calibre now it would be .308....by all means go more whoomph with the PRC but keep the .308!

I’ve never felt the PRC lacking with sika.

The few that have run have all been poor shot placement by me.

Ironically and ive mentioned this before, I found my PRC killed better than my rem mag. Maybe a confidence thing but had runners with the rem mag and nothing to date with the PRC has made it more than a couple yards at best.

Yeah as said, anecdotal. Just from my experience that bigger frontal diameter bullet just kills better. My 308 definitely seems to knock them down better, if you can hit them in the first place!

They all do the same thing. Just my experience
