.270 what rifle would you have..???

depends if you want bling and shine or traditional build quality
and it also depends on your budget

lots of things in your favour.
.270 is not trendy
2nd hand rifles are not trendy

QED
pick up a mauser variant for pennies
often with a scope and mod!

£3-400 gets you a PH, BRNO, BSA with scope and proven field experience

don't underestimate them
you will kill no more deer with a Tikka, Remmy, etc

Thanks for all advice cheers..my idea is to use it for boar and reds etc..so i have a slot i can do a 1 for 1 on im not pre booking days as i feel i have good reason to hold i.e i plan on going stalking !

Mt first rifle was a Browning A-bolt in .270 cost me £350 and has not let me down yet and.i doubt if.it ever will. Shoots 1/2 INCH groups with factory ammo.

Love it

hi cadex, yes i agree with the longer barrel that would give me the velocity it shows in the barnes manual, they averaged at 2,990 with a 24 in barrel, it has good balance at 20 inch though, not awkward in woodland and sits very comfortable on the shoulder, no issues with loosing few 100 feet on vels as it gives them more chance to expand at slightly lower speeds as the barnes have a tendancy to go straight through at very high end speeds,:thumb:

Ah well as the "military calibre" prohibition, at least for the veteran calibres, has now been repealed in France I'd pass on a .308 W and go for a .30-06 if you are going the ".30" route. FWIW this cost me just £250 plus premium at auction. I sold the 'scope on eBay for £220. So not bad for a nett price of about £40!

It may be worth pointing out that this is correct in this case, but that for reasons that make sense to no-one, the 6.5x55 Swedish and indeed the 6.5x54 MS remain prohibited for hunting purposes. The French public can sleep a bit safer knowing that no stray bullets from Mannlicher-Schönauer 1903s will be heading their way. Just from old P14s!

Keep you eyes open for an older Heym, Sauer, Mauser or Sako - on Gunstar there is a Heym SR20 in 270 win, with Apel mounts and a Zeiss 6x42. All of which are high quality and will outlast you and priced at c£700. Many of these types of rifles will have been owned by amateur stalkers, shot at most a box or cartridges a year and spent most of their life in a cabinet.

.....obviously being aware that low round count isnt a guarantuee re bore condition.
make sure you get a good look down the bore ....especially if its screw cut.
you just have to do a quick search on here for horror stories of moderators rusted into place or pitting the bore near the muzzle due to improper care.

managed to pick up a 'brand new' unfired .3006 PH from one of the gunshops for £400 inc mounts and delivery.
pretty basic compared to some of my other tools but its light capable and has seen off several fallow quite emphatically.

I use a remington 270 sps with a HS precision stock on it and I absolutely love it. I probably use about 700 cartridges a year. I have had other makes of rifles but certainly wouldnt have them again

My BSA cf2 stuzen 270,cost just under £200,shot roe,my first red and first boar and will happily cloverleaf with my home loads.
zeis duralyt on top, absolutely cracking rifle and full fills my needs.
I was very lucky in that it's condition is I would describe as new,and has had almost no rounds put through.
I did however have an issue, wher the bolt needed repair a few months back, but didn't cost the earth and it's like new now.

Second the BSA 270 Stutzen. I picked one up for £250 with mounts and scope. Scope I sold for £25 and the mounts for £80! Condition is very good but the base plate is worn were the action screws have been over tightened. Easy fix with a couple of washers but will get a new replacement at some point.

That is a really pretty rifle ! me like it a lot. regards sbm

Nice rifle, I'd love to have one, unfortunately they're hard to find in these parts.
