my rifle has a 20 inch barrel!, I had it shortened from its factory 22 inch to help balance whilst wearing the t8. Has it made a difference in velocity?.... I don't bother asking the deer that I kill as my black magic reincarnation skills are not as good as the killing capability of the 270 .
The fact of the matter is.. THE 270 WORKS!!


Blackrider, if youre' opting for norma rounds be aware that they can sometimes be hard bullets and have had expansion issues in the past, the 110 grainers they do are awesome mind.

having used a 270 for umteen years they certainly can do the job well. The moderators have enable you to extract all the accuracy needed. If I had to pick a rifle to deal with all uk species without the need to reload then it has to be the 270win
 
I chose the .270 for my FAC grant two years ago. Folk told me it was a bad calibre and that I would develop a flinch and such.
Utter nonsense, Every deer I've hit has gone done and I can always finds an RFD that has .270 ammo of some sorts on the shelf.

Ah! But take the "can" off the end and shoot it with that year in and year out and, if you don't wear hearing protection those reincarnated deer, when you ask them, will have to SHOUT at you for you to hear their reply! Without a "can" and with factory ammunition at 3,110fps any 20" or 22" barrel .270 is not pleasant.

My 270 PH cost £60 . Boyds stock and timny trigger now fitted. it is a great caliber and thank the gods that all the "experts" no longer consider it capable of killing deer,moose, boar,inpala,kudu etc,etc,etc.

Bang on buddy!!!

Me and my .270 have been through quite a bit together and I have never felt under gunned against anything on the hill.

She's an old Sako AV with a 20" barrel and a T8 (Norma 130's just scrape over 3000 fps my handloads are a tad slower).

I think the same could be said for any long action class caliber though? Certainly if you had a 20" 30-06 firing the Sako 123gr sp without a mod it wouldn't be too pleasant or a 25-06. In my experience the .270 loaded with 150+ grain bullets is no different from any other similar caliber loaded with 150+ grain bullets out of a 20" barrel, it's just that the standard load for the .270 is the 130 grain and that's why I keep the mod on when using them... thoughts?

Maybe READ what I wrote before posting...:doh:...I've mentioned nothing about recoil at all. Bespoke stock or decent fit or not without a "can" a 270 WCF at 3,110fps in a twenty or twenty-one inch barrel will be unpleasant. Because of the muzzle blast...nothing to do with recoil or not.

Same goes for Churchill XXV shot guns...or Hellis' twenty-six inch barrelled guns. Nice to play with but you could tell, from my late father's generation when ear protection and hearing damage were never considered who owned them (even though you knew anyway) as they were the ones that started the shoot lunch tuning in their deaf aids in their left ear.

As moderators are illegal in Aus we all put up with noise and recoil whether from super magnums or shotguns ...doesn't stop us killing game though.
 
The 270 wil have accounted for more deer in the larder than any other calibre going, surely that says it all. It is a very capable calibre, the folk that slag it have probably never shot it.

I have always wondered just why BSA chambered the 270 Winchester in the short (20" I believe) barrelled Stutzen as it does not gie th best out of the cartridge. I especially noticed the large fireball from the muzzle so i developed a load to shoot the yellow tipped 130 grain Noslers from mine back when such things were normal for range use and even plinking for practice.

This load use the faster burning H380 powder and proved to be excellent for grouping even at 600 yards when we got the chance to shoot at such ranges.

To get the best out of cartridge like the 270 Winchester one really needs a 24" barrel however the accountants it seems dictated shorter barrels to save pennies in production. BSA at least first adopted these shorter barrels to reduce weight in the "Featherweight" line for the High Power range of rifles in the early 1950's. Some number cruncher must had done some sums and later this became the normal barrel length offered by BSA whom at that time were subsidising the Motor Cycle arm of the company and of course Lady Dockers excesses.

As for velocities claimed well many claimed by Ammunition manufacturers are optimistic to say the least I did chrono a couple of factory loads through my Stutzen which of course was not quite fair bearing in mind it's shorter barrel but they were quite down on what was claimed in the brochure and on the box. I tried Norma and RWS as I recall. Mind you any bullet of 7mm diameter, yes .277" IS 7mm ................... 7.03mm actually ;) travelling at 2800 fps or greater is going to ruin any deers day in a serious way :norty: .
 
i shoot a ruger m77 .270 with a t8 moderater and is a brilliant combination with federal 130grain soft points, i wouldnt use any other calibre , it has put down many reds and roe through the years thats why my 223 is now redundanted for roe, a great allrounder
