28gauge steel load

From what i have seen on the web is that for lead 28ga shells then the Vectan A0 powder would be ok but unless i am mistaken i dont think there is published data.
It is similar to Longshot Powder.
I wouldnt have thought it would be a canditate for a steel load ( ?)

I have been loading lead 28ga stuff in 21g loads with Longshot powder.
Whilst i dont think i will be loading steel in this calibre if I was i would use Lil'gun and look to one of the recipes in the advantages manual as mentioned above.

I used A0 a long time ago in 28ga lead shot when FES used to sell it, also SP2 which was very good, then PSB+2SP which I am still using up. Now It’s more a case of what you can get that’s suitable for your use, rather than what price it is. Clay and Game will be just trying to use what powders they have, but the only wads suitable for steel are the TPS non-toxic shot wads and they have none according to their website and £160.00 a thousand when last available.
So a few £ more on powder is irrelevant, better to use the powder that gives the best ballistics.

Yes if they develop a good load for you that saves a few bob then all is good.
I get my shotgun reloading stuff from there and they are nice people to deal with.

Hi everyone just wanted to know if anybody in the uk is loading 28gauge steel cartridges with any success getting a load developed with clay and game but it’s going to take a while cos there busy just wanted a bit of info wads and powder mainly don’t have to give any secrets away I know how it works with reloading thanks mainly for decoying cheers
In spite what Clay Game said Lil-Gun is the powder you need for 28 gauge Steel loads also you can use Gualandi HV Magnum wads with a Mylar Wrap 5/8oz 5 or 4's if you are shooting pigeon I've loaded this load for over three seasons for my brother cleanly killed numerous species of Ducks Geese and pigeon as recently as September 1st opening day i had four shots with my brother gun at flighting Geese and Duck achieving a R&L at each using 5/8oz Steel 4 and 3's 👍

I've only just seen this. Not my usual location for Shotgun reloading chat. I load 28Ga Steel for pigeons and have been for the last couple of years. As StalkerBoydy says; the Guilandi H41 is where it's at for small steel shot in 28 really. The old Iain Charlton loads all used it and his recomendation, as well as Clay and games current rec is that nop steel shot larger than no 5. I dont use a wrap with 6s and zinc plated 5s. The main problem with the H41 (the Hv designation is an american Ballistics products name for the H41) is the length if you are trying to use it in a 69mm case. It's too short so you need to either accept some unprotected shot column or put a lightweight filler on top. I had a bunch of loads tested with LilGun and Lovex D037.2 (AA#9) in 65mm, once fired cheddite cases. I uploaded the data to teh 28Ga society a couple of years ago. I'll go in there and pull the data out then post here. All are an average of 5 shots in the test string.

The old Iain Charlton Steel Shot load sheet has Vectan AO data for the H41 an 15grams steel. Vectan powders are in stoc at CG.

Bernie. Data coming.

Powder: LilGun - 25.5 grains
Wad: Guilandi H-41 (this wad is sold in the USA as BPI's HV28)

Case: Cheddite Once Fired 65mm
Primer: CX2000
Powder: Lovex D037.2 - 28.0 grains
Wad: B&P H06
Filler: Single layer of cut coffee bag mylar wrap.
Payload: 253 grains #6 Steel Shot - (the wrap gives this wad a hair less capacity than H41/HV28)

Results from 5 Shots: 11081 psi (SD 696 psi), MV 1576 fps (SD 16 fps)

I load the lovex load with the H41. I ran a seperate test with a duplex load and was satisfied that the H06 throws a higher pressure than the H41.

Let me know if theres any other info you need. I've probably messed with whatever you're after!

I modified the test gun at clay game as far as I know they have no 28 gauge barrel ,bit rubbish that as I shoot and reload 28 gauge,my mate round the corner has a steel load for the 28 he used delwin for the wad to protect the barrel I will have to get the other details from him if needed

Well here we had lead ban for shotgun ammo since 1996, we only get 28G from the shops in steel shot.
They also come in bismuth, but i dont know where to by them.

Personally i use Vithavouri N340 powder 14gr, 19grams 3mm steelshot i dont know the wads, we only get one type in 28GA they come in a big clear plastic bag intended for steel shot.
Got the load from a friend, dont know much about it, other than it works i my gun.
They make quite nice patterns from my gun, but thats absolutly no gurante they will pattern well in yours.

The Mylar strips they sell are not cheap we by sheets from eBay then cut it to what ever size you need

Had a look at that yesterday you got to get the right thickness was trying to convert from microns but I’m not the sharpest 🥴

This wad is 28GA for 18 grams of steel shot, but i find 19 grams fits better.
Sorry but i dont know the brand.

I was looking at the Winchester. They also make a steel shot 410 load. Now if only we could get these in the UK in a 2 1/2” case all will be good.

I have seen them in Bismuth, from Rio, but anything other than 3" are hard to find.
410 is a rare caliber here, most shops dont have them home and have to order them in.
Had a talk to the owner of the big shop I linked to, they sell less than 10 boxes (25 pieces) of 410 a year. They only keep them to be "well assorted".
On the other hand they sell 25-30 pallets of 12 gauge a year.
