I know this has been talked about loads but to all the people out there that OWN a 30-60 with a barrel between 18-22” what sort of velocity are you all getting with bullets from 150-200gr please

The American forum the Accurate Reloading Forum is a good resource for all things .30-06 as, so I am told, it seems to be quite a popular cartridge over there.

I've just been through this, and decided against the 30-06, because I just couldn't get the speed (energy) I wanted, to justify the calibre, over what I already had.

Now, that doesn't mean it won't suit you.

The best combinations I could come up with, ON PAPER (Quickload), based on a 20" barrel, Lapua 185gn Mega, & SAAMI spec' 3.340".

These are based on a theoretical lower node, but could be worked up. Factory ammunition will be slow.

1) RL26 64.8gn, estimated 2710fps

2) RS60 57.1gn, estimated 2661fps

3) RS62 59.5gn, estimated 2650fps

I have a Blaser 30/06 with a 20.5” barrel.
I feed it with a moderately loaded 165 grain SPBT round. Kills stuff very effectively. Can’t remember if I ever shot it over a chronograph. Should be doing 2750 FPS or thereabouts.

I have a 22” barrel, 150gr Sierra SPBT’s with 46.8gr Varget and I’m getting 2630fps chrono’d.

good expansion on the roe I’ve shot.

regards,
Goxer

My Schultz & Larsen is 22", in the loads Ive settled on, only gone for accuracy, not speed
165gn Accubond - 54gn RS60 2770fps
165gn Sierra Gameking - 56gn IMR4350 2620fps
180gn RWS Hmantel - 55.3gn Viht N160 2650fps

currently trialling some 150gn TTSX and 165gn Fox, both over RS60

T3 lite is 20"
165gr Hornady interlock over 56grs Ramshot Big Game doing 2700fps
Does everything I want it to do.
Just testing some N150 at the moment.

I have owned 30-06 from 16.5" to 25 inches. I still have a half dozen (?) of them from 20" to 25 inches. I don't think I've chronographed a single load from the current crop of 30-06s. I never cared what the velocity was because everything I point them at out to 250 yards falls over dead. ~Muir

Ancient worn (no rifling for inches, longer chamber) brno 21" - 150gr 2800fps, 165gr 2750fps
23" M700 - 150gr 3000fps, 180 2800fps

I agree modern 308 loads are impressive. For the same overall rifle length you gain approx 1.5" barrel and with care and luck a 150gr might be close on the heels of the 06.Thus far it hasn't for me.

All this is vaguely irrelevant. Rifle choice, feel, balance and ammo are more important. If its a Blaser or Tikka with full length action there is no reason other than recoil andammo not to go 06

When I owned my Blaser I got 2650fps 180 grain Nosler Partition, did everything I wanted it to do here and in Montana.
Using 56 grain IMR4350
Cheers
Richard

Find myself in the Muir camp too, have a couple of 30.06 Tikka 695s, one a continental heavy barrel and the other a battue with an 18 1/2 inch tube. Not sure on the difference in velocity but quarry reaction is the same usually with factory 180 grainers.

Worked up five loads for it last summer and killed a deer with each all using the same sight in . But to be honest I never shot them over the Chrony . But I will say five shots five dead deer each with a different bullet .

Had a 22” barrel on my Win M70 and was getting accurate loads between 2650 (180’s) and 2900 (150’s). There is more velocity available if necessary but with the shorter barrel the 30-06 is really a long-action 308 with more recoil. Rebarrelled to 25” and getting 2955fps with 165gr Gamechangers - which is much useful for the type of shooting I do.

I have a 20” barrel on my sauer 202
Fed on 180 gr federal fusion or Norma orex and Privi .Never bothered looking at what FPS .
Just bang and flop😜Works for me
