308 bullet suggestions

Yet another topic on suggestions for bullets. Can never get enough tho. Iam well set on the 6.5x55 and .243 and 30-06 etc.

My 308 will keeel as a certain tv personality would say.

But its still not as accurate as i would like.

Dont get started on "good enough" good enough is factory fodder at reasonable ranges. I like a challenge. So lets have a crack at some suggestions and theories on why they might be good.

So far i have tried various factory loads
Fox 130gr
Fox 150gr
Tarvas 150gr
Tarvas 165gr
Berger VLD
Sako hammerheads
Barnes TTSX
Sako blade
And some varmint bullets, best being lapua 100gr OTCE

Generally bad groups for this rifle are about 15-30cm

good groups around 5-10cm

Lapua OTCE gives around 5cm groups
Factory PMC 150gr bronze FMJ around 7-10 cm
PMC soft point 150gr about 20cm
GGG is just a no go all around.

Old russian steel case fodder in an unmarked brown box is around 5cm

Fox 130gr about 7cm on average
fox 150gr about 10cm.

Now you are going to be thinking to yourself, what rifle could shoot like that...

Many say it has no buisness even shooting under 2moa, but i feel like with just the right food i can go just about sub moa with it! Il just have to try.

Now they do have to be deer bullets!

Aaand bonus points if its going around 830m/s with a BC of about .320 because thats what my scopes reticle works well with

beats the intention of this setup. The bipod is quick release. I also use this setup for practical shooting. Why does it matter tho? the handguard is free floated. Its a magpul zhukov but its not mounted in the intended way. In case you or others arent familiar, this type of handguard rides on a full length steel frame that is clamped to the barrel shank. I however went further.

The RPK has a kindof socket in the receiver underneath the barrel for the original wooden handguard to be fitted into before tightening the habdguard retainer. I utilised this by instead using wedge blocks and bolts to secure the handguard frame directly to the receiver. It has a steel extension (home made) bolted to the bottom of the receiver and wedge blocks.

The plastic handguard is then slid onto the frame and secured to it with 2 little bolts. I replaced those with longer bolts and tapped into the receicer as well

So any pressure on the handguard/bipod is only applied to the receiver and gass block, nothing touches the barrel exept for the gass block. The gass tube is also fitted in such a way that it cant exert forces onto the barrel.

To protect it i did grind down the original clamps to sit about 2 millimeter off the barrel and act as a stopper if the guard takes an impact or flexes too mutch. Otherwise it might damage the bolts or receiver.


The bipod is kinda integral to this type of rifle, it being a squad assistance weapon for targeted supressive fire and engaging priority targets at mid range.

Doubles as a hunting rifle because why not.

now with this setup i definitely see a problem for precision:

The RPK is however a very versatile base for other types of rifle.

For instance this PSL54



Or the yugo m90

or the comercial Vepr

I essentially created a hybrid of those two, in 308.

The scope is original to the PSL-54 and the reticle and quick range turret (100m clicks) are calibrated for a 7.62x54r 147gr going 820-840 m/s
