308 for roe deer

I’m suspect that I am going to upset a few people here as I know there are a lot of users, but my own experience of Sierra Pro-hunters is that they are super accurate but the moment they touch bone they create way too much damage so exit meat wastage is high.

I use Speer #2022 SPBT 150gr with a mild load of 43.1gr N140 behind it and CCI LR200 primer. This is well below max pressure according to QL but gives about 2650fps from a factory standard Sako 75 barrel (which I think is 22”) and with that load I take everything from Munty to Reds. There is very little recoil or flip and It kills quickly with good exit and BT on all shot placements I.e. head, neck, HL and shoulders with minimal meat damage even when striking bone. Obviously, shoulder shots give high levels of meat damage regardless of bullet type. I have tested in the field and am happy with shots on all species out to 300m, it could probably be good for longer shots but that’s my max so can only verify it’s success to that distance. Most shots taken under 200m.

Ps. My load data given for info, not suggesting it should be used without proper/incremental load development.

Pps. Prior to the above load I used factory Federal factory ammo which was P308C. From memory it was 165gr with similar velocity to my own loads and was super accurate and did very little damage.
