308 loads?

For Foxes & vermin :-
47gr Varget, Rem. 9.5 std primer, 130gr Speer HP bullet, WW Super or Lapua brass.

For Deer :-
47.25gr Varget, Fed.210 Match primer, WW Super brass, 150gr Hornady RN Soft-point bullet.

Both shoot better than half-inch groups at 100yds in my Sako but all loads should be worked up to due to different firearm tolerances.

44gr of Vhit 140, CCI Primer, 150gr Gameking head.

Keyhole at 100m with my Tikka T3

44gn's n140 + 150gn bullet is the universal .308 load

you can spend hours looking for the second and third hole out of my R93 (and no i'm not missing the target!)

44 grains of Varget under 150gr Sierra Gameking shoots less than an inch and gets about 2650 fps off the chrono. The new chrono, not the old one. Thats another story!

The target below was shot at a DMQ style 12 shot deerstalkers shoot in April, 100m simulated hi-seat 6 shots, 70m sitting 3 shots and 40m standing 3 shots, [I made a cock-up here and dropped one point, all the low shots on the Buck target were off the sticks.]
2nd in comp with 119/120 , it was won by William Wykes with a perfect 120/120 !

This was the first load I mentioned utilising the Speer 130gr HP bullet.

Lapua brass, CCI Bench Rest primers

44 grns Vit N140, 150grn Sierra Gameking.

Clover leaf groups at 100yrd and less than an 1inch at 200yrds puts them down well out of a SAKO 85.

What sort of trajectory are the 150grainers chucking?....are they flat shooting?
Im using 123g at the mo for deer and fox (sako factory) but would like something a bit heavier for some plains game in Feb.

reloading 308

I am just starting to get the kit together and studying the literature to reload. I have set up the kit for my 308 and want to home load my own hunting rounds.
I only want to use 150gr minimum bullet as I have very accurate .243 for smaller stuff.

General concensus seems to be Vhit powder, CCI primer, but any help with the bullet, I want to go for good quality to start with and only good soft point with expansion, not ballistic tip or anything silly. Currently use Rem core lokt factory ammo or nosler partition (.243) and both kill cleanly for me.
Any advice on any of the above?

Note the comment by Jason about 4-6" drop at 200 if zeroed at 100, but surprised as I do not find this with my 308 on current Rem factory ammo, zero at 100 I get flat at 170 and probably 2" drop at 200.
Cheers JP

JP.

Your info. and findings are incorrect.

I have in front of me Remington info which states that at a 100yd zero their bullets drop from 1.1 to 1.7 inches at 150 yards and are 3.6 to 5.3 inches low at 200 yards depending on bullet weight.

Get real, you cannot beat gravity !

Hi JP,

Drop is a bit more than for my little boomer as I have a finnlight with short barrel and mod so I loose a bit of speed, gravity does the rest.

Either way the thing key holes at 200 with Gameking's.

BULLET DROP

Ive read the data on my 123g Sako rounds which state the same but on the range i found that zero'd at 100yds they were .5" high at 200yds and about .75 to 1" high at 300yds
Went off and looked up the data again on the net and went back to the range with a clean gun and some more of the same ammo and produced the same!

Do you folks really mean "key-hole" ?? In the Yank lexicon of shooting nomenclature that means the bullet is hitting sideways.~Muir

Hi Muir, I think those that use it over here are mistakenly referring to a ragged hole, as you say "keyhole" is usually understood to mean de-stabilised rounds going through other than pointy bit first! Steve.

You guys are undoubtedly right as my details are paces and not exact, I just know that when I shoot my remington ammo in my remington rifle it is spot on at 100 and pretty much the same at 160ish and a few inches at about 200 paces, so it probably fits with the details you guys have, I guess I need to start being more precise entering the reloading world.
I promise to be alot more precise when I reload!

Went to the gun shop today and got the CCI primers, Varget powder (could not get the Viht as I wanted) and some 150 grain nosler partition .308 heads.

Any recommendations for loads etc and tips for the novice? I will obviously use the charts etc, but would value your experience. I am awaiting the rest of the kit, press etc to arrive soon.
Cheers
JP

amazing groups! nice shooting. I find the my scope rectical is not fine enough to see the bull. I am not that good a shot anyway are you using a stalking scope like the S&B 7 or Swas 4a ?
