.308 suggestions for stalking and range use.

The CTR certainly ticks the right boxes. Solid design and a good stock, presuming you're considering an adjustable one, great box mag and a semi-varmint barrel .

I use my for range work and stalking. The extra weight will tell on a hill, but I fitted a niggeloh sling on side mounts and it's a doddle to carry.

Mines a 20" in 6.5 CM, absolute tackdriver and good out to 1000 on the range.

Ive been down the exact route as you, i ended up with a Bergara HMR with the 24'' barrel, 308, used it at Bisley also in the Field,
and now its been in the cabinet for 2 years unused, and i might let it go.
This would certainly fit the bill too.

Sauer 100 or 101 with either varmint or mid weight barrels would cover both range and stalking requirements in synthetic stocks and with thumbhole if desired. best of luck look to see what is available on Guntrader .

Interesting. Why has it been in the cabinet for a couple of years? Did you find that that it didn't work as a crossover and another rifle was the "go to"rifle?

I looked at the HMR also but the price that you can at a CTR for swayed me and I purchased one second hand hardly used 20” barrel and I walk miles with mine with a back pack sling and you wouldn’t know it was there,

Just dont get the time for Bisley, and now my job has changed slightly , so its foxing 223, or a quick walk around the farms i take the 17 Hornet
for that,

Now what scope are you going to put on it !!
With regards to the moderator I have a wildcat evolution and that fits the bill.

I'm after informed suggestions for a .308 that would be a good crossover rifle for stalking and range use. I looked at a Steyr Scout but I don't think I like its aesthetics and the barrel profile is too thin.
Bang goes my suggestion then.....................

My Jeff Cooper Steyr Scout does the business in the field and on the range (off to do 300 and 600 at Bisley tomorrow, after grassing a nice 6-pointer yesterday).

I really like the idea and wanted to like the rifle but when I actually held one it just didn't float my boat. Have fun shooting tomorrow.

Have a look a the Mauser m18 Tom. Welcome to have a go of mine (it’s a .243 tho)
Alot of rifle for the money
I may take you up on that Mike. I have held one and it seemed like a well constructed rifle. My reservation with it might be the light sporter barrel for range wwork. That said, even with a sporter barrel it will probably shoot far better than I can make it 😀

We were shooting 2 sighters and 7 to count. As it is a stalking rifle, I was simply aiming off, rather than messing with the scope settings. At 300, with a fairly strong breeze, I got 6 x 5s including 2 x V bulls and called a flier that scored a 3 at 6 o'clock. The other 8 rounds were in a +/- 2 MOA group. This was off the integral Steyr Scout bipod with the 2.5 mag IER scope. 600 was a bit more akin to lobbing artillery. :) I was aiming at some undetermined area of sand above the target frame to bring the rounds down into the black. Best score from there was a 28 (annoying after a V bull sighter). Basically a lot of 4s with elevation being the issue - all below the bull. However this was better than a couple of the club members with all the target rifle and shooting accessories.

So have you thought about the Ruger version of the Scout rifle? This might scratch your aesthetic itch.

I'll be following this thread quite closely as I'm essentially looking for the same thing. I did see good reviews of the Tikka and also someone recommended a Mauser M12 on another thread. However the M12 is just a silver barrel rather than the stainless of the Tikka CTR if you wanted a stainless version to go with the synthetic stock.

Is an adjustable stock something that's worth considering?

Bergara b14 hmr .308 for me in 24”
cost was factor and main factor was availability in left hand .....
thrown a general load together for shooting barrel in and groups
