.357magnum/.38Special

Yes it was common practise back in the day to load 9mm (.355" bullets) in .38 spl cases for short range lightweight loads.
I managed a true, chronographed, 1500fps with Speer 88 grain JHP form my 5" barrel Smith & Wesson pre-Model 27 .357 Magnum using 2400 powder.

My ticket says .38/.357 for both ammo and firearm. I have a Marlin 1894 and have had minor challenges over the years with both 357 and 38 spl feeding, but these have pretty much always been with wadcutters. Sometimes with slightly misshapen cast bullets too, but not often. Round nosed or truncated cone bullets in both normally feed just fine. I also have a Chiappa Rhino and don’t have any issues with feeding or shooting either in that too :)

Someone i know had a problem buying a gun when he put one down and the gun was chambered in the other.
When i applied for mine i made sure to put .38sp/.357

Some of the leveractions can be a bit sensitive to feeding the shorter special rounds. I understand the Marlin 1894s are more sensitive than the 1892s and their clones.

Worth thinking about though:

If you shoot the specials in a magnum chamber, you can get a ring of crud building up in the chamber infront of where the special case mouth sits. This can cause problems when chambering and shooting magnum rounds so worth making sure is clean when switching between the 2 ammo types.

To Scrumbag’s comment on carbon ring, heard it can happen, but a regular chamber brushing can see to this. Never had a problem myself.

Mark's quite right. Regular cleaning sorts it. Only time I think it might be an issue is say if there is a comp say shooting your cast bullets in specials at 25 yrds in the morning then you shoot 100 and 200 yds in the afternoon with your jacketed magnum loads.

(Well, some of us are dumb enough to sign up for those sorts of things...)

So Ive just applied for the variation, (On-Line), if I dont have my new cert' by the end of the week Ill be very dissappointed :)

We shall see....

Yep - very common occurrence if 38s shot regularly out of 357 magnum revolver but a good solvent and brush removes it pretty quickly.

My Marlin could handle both .38 and .357

One of the cheapest way to shoot I think I could reload for around the same as a box of rimfire,

I always wanted one of those Ruger 77's in .357 with a sound moderator

I just like the idea of a bolt action rifle in pistol calibre

Well done Surrey and Sussex.

I applied for a variation on-line @15:51 on Monday, @ 12:41 today ( Thursday )I got the email back asking me to send in my FAC to complete the variation. :-)
