45-70

I built one on a Martini 40 years ago, and it was superb for bush hunting back when I could use iron sights..... but I found a 22.250 was better for the commercial stuff and sold it.
Sorta regret it now. I welded a lever to the firing pin indicator and used it to decock the action while hunting, then to cock it before firing. It worked well.

🤔

Neither do I? The .45-70 is generally a sub 100y cartridge which is big heavy and slow with lots of knock down power - guess what range I tend to shoot at in thick woodland?
Sub 100 yard cartridge???? Really??? I was shooting mine last week at 300 yards, with iron sights and hitting the target

Yeesh you can’t say anything on this site without someone jumping down your throat…

I didn’t say it wasn’t capable of shooting further than 100y, I meant it is a sub 100y (maybe 150y) hunting cartridge.

JMHO and all that jazz.
i wouldnt worry about one of your critics, if hes not talking nonsense he is off line.
do what you do

I built mine for hunting in heavy bush, thinking the big bullets would be handy for not being deflected by leaves and light branches while peep sights would be fast.
What i found was the only advantage it had was it was nicer to carry in one hand than a scoped rifle, but otherwise every advantage lay with the 22.250. The scope helped pick a clean path for the bullet, and the extra legs were handy for longer shots. Not to mention I tended to shoulder shoot with the 45/70, and head and neck shoot with the scoped rifle - which had a big effect on carcase value.
I'd use one again for fun now that I just shoot for the freezer or to waste, but if something really needs to be shot I'll use my 280 with a 3-12 Klassik on top.

I wasn't jumping down your throat, I was merely expressing an opinion based on what you had written.

It is a sub 100 yard gun on real game shot ethically . Shooting steel targets ? well that's a totally different game when injured wild boar and such pose a real danger . Great fun gun on plastic bottles of water etc
