45-70

Hornady do a very good 250 gr monoflex copper bullet, expands to about .8” with sharp petals.

This is 2200 fps at the muzzle, shot into 10 gallon adblu containers filled with water, retrieved from the 3rd container in a row.

Hi Sharps,

I am going to be moving towards mono metal shortly, to get ahead and future proof - what accuracy are you getting? Performance looks good and what powders have you settled on?
I currently get same hole accuracy with sierra 300gr and n135 so I am loathed to change.

It’s genuinely the most accurate bullet out of that gun (remlin), 1” at 80 yards, the limiting factor is probably me.

Powder wise I’m using 8208xbr which won’t be a lot of help as it’s a REACH powder but n130/35 should be fine.

Hi K,PXL_20250511_111838220~2.webpPXL_20250511_111838220.webp
Home loads using 300 gn sierra and data from the first Vhit manual. It's a Ruger no3 with a no1 stick set - a number 2 I think the Americans call them.
I am about to try and find a non lead solution that works if anyone out there has a good head start to offer.

When I joined the TSD I had an expectation of reading about 45/70s in the UK....but that didn't happen. So expectation turned to hope then hope became despair. Then voila...this thread popped up. 👍

Yes...my mistake...but just a simple typing error. Been so used to just typing "70" over the years... I meant "45/70/90" covering both discussion bases.

What factory hunting ammo is available that will function safely in a modern (non black powder) falling block highwall rifle, and what nitro powders are available to the UK handloader in 2025?

I have discovered many favorite loads for a various calibers from this manual.
I use the N135 data for the 45-70 with 300 gn bullets K

Whats your thinking in respect of cartridge air space with such charges? Clearly you can't adopt the BP approach of filling case to rim but there does seem a lot of unused space when using nitro!

I would get one in a flash if I had the Job for it in the UK , thing is i haven't got UK boar ground and that is about the only practical thing i can come up with what it does it does- away from putting holes in targets Big holes with plenty recoil and a big bang burning a lot of powder each trigger press

Nah - I got mine for deer stalking in thick woodland with no issues.

Get one, you won’t regret it!

N135 virtually fills the case in max load in my. 222, 30-30, .308, 9.3. with Stella grouping and more than adequate velocities.
