First rifle: steer me away from .450 Bushmaster?

I did shoot 45-70 in my club, it was fun. But I believe it has been underloaded to about 1/3 of the full load so recoil wasn't as bad, otherwise it would have probably been not as fun...
Some of my loads give me blood blisters when shooting from a rest, you can really get some power out of it look at some 500 and 600 grain loads on youtube

As for 6.5CM I can't shoot that at my club's range nor military ranges around me.
By no means am I a great fan of the 6.5 CM but it is a good cartridge in its parameters . Anyway I’m curious why it’s not allowed to your gun club since it’s a commercial round and never has been military to the best of my knowledge ?

Rifles when handled in the flesh are very very different to how they look in pictures or video. For instance I really don’t like shooting AR type rifles, especially not with piccattiny / mlock metal hand guards. They have all the subtlety of feel of an aluminium scaffolding pole with lots of sharp edges.
I was never intrested in AR’s until Trump ran for president the first time as I assumed Clinton would win then try to shut down AR production . So I acquired three AR-15’s and an AR-10 a month before the election in anticipation of possibly rolling them over for a modest profit . And much like yourself being more of a blued steel walnut stocked type of fellow . Anyway all the AR’s I acquired and extra uppers I got ALL had round fiberglass or aluminum forends . That piccatinny tail BS is great if you get into the tacticool stuff of which I don’t . I however really liked the AR-15 Alexander Arms 6.5 Grendel I had as well as the AR-10 with self built uppers in 260 REM and 338 Federal .

As I understand it the Royal Marines have acquired a number of 6.5cm AR10 type rifles. Because of the high BC bullets with better long range performance than 7.62 NATO the operators of military ranges have thrown a hissy fit about how dangerous 6.5cm is and how much greater a danger area envelope they require and they are uncertain as to whether they fit into 300 win mag or 338 Lapua as used in the sniper rifles. Hence there is a ban on use of 6.5 cm on military ranges (most pf which are run by private sector companies) until the full ballistic envelope is worked out. Many clubs also shoot on these ranges, hence ban applies to them as well.

Of course, given all the hype over the 6.5cm and its long range performance, the powers that be are absolutely correct in this course of action. :)

Many clubs also have ranges, especially the indoor type ones that are built for 22 lr and pistol calibre type cartridges. They don’t have target backstops suitable for full bore cartridges.

it's not just 6.5 creedmoor , it's all 6.5 rifles because people went on about how the 55 etc are just the same so rather than see the sense of what was being said and not ban stuff for no reason they banned all 6.5's

brilliant........

When I start long range shooting I will definitely get myself 6 or 6.5CR or PRC. Now I just need to ask for slots on my first certificate for something I can shoot on my indoor range.

Do you guys think that asking for .22LR, .300BLK and 44Mag would work for the first timer in the eyes of FLO?

Can you justify the need for each cartridge to your FLO. Will your rifle club Chairman support your application? Rather than asking the Internet, I would be speaking with your club, as they will have to support your application.

As an officer of an Approved rifle club, over the years we have had calls from FLO’s asking about Joe Bloggs and his FAC application and a whole host of type of guns that are unsuitable for our range. I had to tell the FLO that far from being a full member of the club, Joe Bloggs had once made an enquiry, had been sent a probationary form and we had never heard from him again, so we certainly unable to give any opinion on his suitability to hold firearms. I don’t think we have then an angry call from Joe Bloggs as to why we had discriminated against him - but I suspect it happens.

With a 100 yard zero (dependant on bullet weight) most of what I see suggests 8” drop at 200m & 30”+ at 300m?! Unless you’re shooting pigs close up why bother for range use…… meteors fall to earth quicker than that!🤣 I get that it’s good to be different sometimes but tbh it sounds like a lot of effort for not much benefit to me? Keep it simple for your initial grant & vary later would be my thought👍

The ranges my club has are 25m indoor and 50m outdoor. At the moment I don't have access to anything larger, Bisley is a long way from me.
I need to start somewhere...

Yes, absolutely. My club said I have to make up my mind first and they will support me with any sensible caliber.

A club mate applied for his first FAC asking for 6 different calibers, which include a long barrel revolver, and all of them were granted as club supported the application. But he hunts deer too so his needs are different from mine.

Asking the Internet doesn't mean I didn't ask the people in the club 😃

I get that, but I really would look at cost of running a rifle. Calibre per se doesn’t make a lot of difference, especially at shorter ranges. Price does. Paying 50p per cartridge hurts, paying over a pound a bang makes a much bigger hole in the wallet.

.357m 0,6£ /round
.44m 0,75£
45/70 4£ (if you handload H&N bullet 0,5£, powder 0,4£, primer 0,1£ +cases)
.300blk 1£ 200gr sub (can also be done with a home cast bullet and 8gr of powder +0,1£ primer)

Big bore subsonic - rounds - ricochet - all slow moving projectiles are more prone to ricochet- or you could call it uncontrolled directional movement- like .22 rimfire subsonic.
On a range it’s very controlled with nice backstops etc

But take it out to distance for the first time, unfamiliar ballistics and scope settings and it’s an accident waiting to happen. ( If you know what your doing have lots of great experience then carry on but few have this)

First FAC - stick to what is the norm at the club, find a club that shoots what you want to shoot, and speak to the FEO as they are the ones that are going to issue or not issue your FAC.

From experience don’t get fancy calibres - get ones you can easily buy ammo - from your local shops or find the shops you can buy from.

Can I speak to my FEO without applying / asking for slots first? Looks like a chicken and egg situation.
