6x45 excitement

What kind of foam are you using to fill the stock voids with? I have a Tikka 595 stock that I am playing with & have been wondering what to use to deaden it & give it rigidity. I've been mulling over ideas to insert strengthening "beams" into the forestock molding them in place then foaming it.

Hi Yorric, here's the stuff:

You probably need about 30ml of mixture to fill a foreend. I would glue the stiffening rods into place first though with epoxy. You'll need to rough up or drill little holes for the epoxy to key to as it wont adhere to the plastic stock.

I can always send you a small quantity if you like. Just need to find some little containers.

I know it will be heavier but you may be better off filling the foreend with epoxy like Nathan Foster does. You'll need to roughen up the plastic and drill holes as above.

Stunning stock project.

How did you make it? Male mould that you put a glass shell onto or split female moulds that you then joined?

Thanks, Nigel. Will try and get better pics when it's finished. I've just succeeded in covering the metalwork with epoxy whilst bedding - hopefully I can get it all off easily!

I made two mould halves and then made each half in them. Then bolted mould halves together and then applied strips of fibreglass to seams from butt end and open foreend.

Will send you some pics to your email.

You are some cookie Rory! I'm following this :thumb:

Cheers, mate! I was impatient and pulled the action out of the stock a few hours after epoxy bedding. The AGA helps speed the curing.

Will file it and sand it to tidy it up then send it off to my new (cerakote) friend!

Thanks for the info Rory & your generous offer. I'll be a while sourcing & epoxy glueing the strengthening rods in before I need to fill the forend. So no hurry. I'll be in touch when I'm a bit nearer to it.(if I take that route)
I have also thought that I could just fill the bottom of the voids in the stock with cut up bits of closed cell carry mat foam & then epoxy covering the top to seal it all in. That way I'd save weight whilst making the forend more rigid.

Ian

p.s. sorry for taking the thread off topic.

No worries at all, Ian. Sounds like a good idea - hope it works well.

Very nice
how's the balance?

I am looking at carbon pre-preg at the moment
the bit I haven't quite figured out is the forend fill for a solid bipod mount and weighting for a mid action balance point.
on a sporter length barrel I am assuming a carbon stock with no stock weighting will make it very nose heavy

You'll be fine, Ed. There's more material in the butt which keeps COG back. See picture attached showing rough COG locations. Forend is stiff enough for bipod mounting as it is - with carbon fibre it could be better. Localised epoxy castings will be enough for bipod mounting if you're not happy with swivel studs glued in with epoxy.

A little problem has arisen at the proof house. They don't have 6x45 proof cartridges. I've FL sized some .223 cases and will send them off today for making the proof loads. Hopefully they will chamber!

I know you're sending yours to London but I spoke to Birmingham the other day. For my 9.3x57 I am sending 3 pieces of 8x57 brass and my dies. The head of cartridges will then neck up and load the cartridges to fit.
Just an option for you if those cases you send don't work out.

My rifle is at London proof but cartridges are only loaded at Birmingham apparently - that's where I'm sending cases to. I sized them the maximum amount so should work out ok.
