6XC or 6mm Creedmoor?

Probably not a new question, but one worth re-visiting. Given the choice between 6XC and 6mm Creedmoor, which would you choose and why? I appreciate there is little to seperate these calibres - case capacity is similar while the 6mm CM achieves slightly higher muzzle velocities - but for me the main consideration, at least for me, is rifle availability. The 6XC has been around for more than a decade and while popular among competition shooters, Lapua doesn't make brass for it and it's nigh on impossible to find factory loads. In contrast, the 6mm CM is yet to be adopted by European rifle manufactuers, such as Blaser, Sako and Tikka.

I run a 6 Creed for PRS & I like it. There’s factory ammo if you can find it but it’s expensive. Plenty of high quality brass options out there too.
The 6XC has a following as it’s an excellent cartridge but fell short as it didn’t have the marketing that the creedmoor family gets
Either cartridge is a good choice but if you want a Blaser, Sako or Tikka get a 6.5 Creedmoor. Ammo everywhere, can take everything in the UK with it, reloading options are plentiful & when you get bored of it & fancy a change it’ll be significantly easier to sell than the 6CM/6XC

Just my 10 cents

Both these chamberings in the UK will be home load only pretty much.
If you're after a 6mm, why not buy a new 243 with an 8 twist.
Because the 6mm XC can use less powder and the case design is inherently better than the .243, its what the .243 shoud have been from the start some would say, if we knew then what we know now.

Ive sold my .243 and am going down the 6mm XC route, it was this or the 6 creed.

For me the 6XC gives better barrel life and uses less powder, but can still send lead over 3000fps, why chase 100fps with the creed.

Norma brass is good for upto 20 loads so if you can source some once fired you are golden, ive got my dies and brass ready to go just need my variation back

Agreed. Having looked in to it, I've narrowed it down to the 6XC or the 6mm CM for much the same reasons as you. If I already had a .243 rifle it would be different. I'm comfortable loading either the 6XC or the 6CM myself, so not concerned about the limitations of factory offerings.
As this is not a decision I need to make today, I can keep mulling it over until I submit my renewal in July next year.

I think you have answered your own question.
Very similar calibre and performance.
So availability is a key factor.

Cheers

Pretty much the reason why I went 6mmXC in regards to barrel life compared to the CM.

I managed to find the last of the Diamond Line factory Norma ammo in the UK so I am working my way through this and have also done loads development for lead and non lead with the brass.

I am supremely happy with the 6mmXC. I will have another barrel chambered again if I ever shoot this 1 out.

Have you thought about 6mm BR?
I went with that over the xc and creed.
Im still pushing a 105gn at 2880fps. It's not as fast as the others can get but it's still quick. Barrell life is a lot better as well.

Is there not feeding issues with the BR from a mag?

I’ve had several 6mmbr’s and to be honest it’s my favourite round. It just doesn’t feed reliably unless you have a rifle designed specifically to feed it. I’ve had a Blaser R93 that was brilliant. AICS wasn’t perfect and double feeds and hitting the feed ramp was an issue.

As such I moved on to 6mm creedmoor. One in a Sako 85 barreled by @Ronin and a Desert Tech done by Dolphin. Both with 20” barrels after a cock up in communication as the Desert Tech should have been 16”. Both shoot factory Hornady Varmint Express in the .2’s. £50 a box isn’t big money now days. 2925fps. I will get round to loading eventually.

6mm creedmoor is readily available as factory ammunition and it performs better in a short barrels than .243 don’t ask me why, it just does.

Not only that, it looks more dangerous than a .243 🤣

No idea?
Mines a single shot!

A friend had one he built and that's ok as far as I know? I'm sure he had to do something to the magazine to get it to work.
He never complains about it, hes very good at moaning so I'm sure I'd know if there was an issue.

Definitely not something you want on a stalking rifle

I would definitely be interested in your findings with load development.

My 6mmBR is a SAKO M591, originally chambered in .22-250 Rem. I was assured that this action worked fine with the BR by someone that had tried various rifle actions. Standard floorplate magazine, takes 5 rounds, feeds and ejects fine.
My sole fox rifle now seen as the 17 Rem found a new home....
