7mm rem magnum - what is it?!?

Thanks Boydy. Don't worry, when I realise I can't justify it either it might come up for sale!

I would be interested to hear of this bolt on adaptor, although I suspect in reality if I wanted it modded it just needs to be cut (for cost and weight reasons). It wasn't a pricey gun so I just need to focus on it as a tool I suspect.

Nice. Don't know about heavy but the scope mounts look high.
Nice looking rifle though. Let us know how it shoots.
I never did follow this up - it shoots really well! 200m a doddle, must try 300 plus. I have a 3-9 x 40 grand slam on it. I have screw cut it, and recently been using 175gr federal (will be try some different home loads, have tried a few with the lee loader). I find the recoil and nice firm push and not snappy at all, it would not put me off using it all the time honestly. And the mounts are quick release and go back perfectly to zero...

Thanks for everyone’s input at the time

I read this thread with interest. Yet nobody has mentioned barrel length?

Any 24" .270 WCF is preferable to any 22" barrel 7mm RM. For all you are doing is spending money on extra powder to make up for that lost two inches.

But a 24" barrel 7mm RM will outperform a 24" barrel .270 WCF with bullets of equivalent weight AND give you the option of heavier...that's .30-06 weight...bullets.

As a homeloader you've better choice of weights and styles in .284 including FMJ for cheap practice. That may be an important consideration?

Remember Holland & Holland listed a .275 Magnum as well as the better known .300 Magnum. So they too saw some merit in a belted 7mm style.

For me it's barrel length and (if handloading) versatility I'd consider.

When I took my RM hind shooting I was politely asked by the stalker when we got back to the larder "don't bring that bloody thing with you next year". It's too much gun for hinds. A big Stag in fair enough, it will do a better job than your 6.5 or .243 if the bullet isn't perfectly placed, but a 270 Win is plenty of gun for that task. Unless you are into shooting Stags at 300 yds you just don't need one in the UK for stalking.

I don't have 7 RM my self but I shoot a friend now and again when he has it out.
Mainly load development.
He uses 162gr A-MAX just now over N-160.
He dose not push it to fast about 2900ft/sec.
Recoil is not that bad and it's very accurate.
But out to 300y my 30-06 will do the same on deer.
Only real advantages is if your into long rage shooting.
We've stretched it out to 1000y and still hitting th targets.

2 friends of mine have a 7 rem mag, both blasers one shoots 168's (I think) the other is pushing 180gr eld at around 2900. i would not buy one to use factory loads, may aswell stick with 270. use the heaviest bullets that will stabilise in your rifle, the longer shots you take will thank you!!

Hi all - I have been looking for a husqvarna 1900 (just because that's all I ever want in a rifle) in 270 for the hill. I have a 243 and 6.5x55 in the same that are clinically accurate, but fancy a big boomer for my hill trips, usually taking the 243 at the moment.

I have found a husky in 7mm rem mag - is it going to be a similar thing, fairly flat shooter etc? And what is the availability of factory ammo? I could get a lee loader and get into it, but that's as far as I would want to go with re loading.

answers on a postcard please!

thanks ES
Sell everything you have, forget the big 7, get a 30/06 in the rifle of your choice. Why? Because that’s all you need.
