7mm rifles

I currently have a .243, but should be getting a 7mm08 in the next month or so. Quite excited to be honest as from what ive seen its as close to the "perfect" round for uk stalking as most others. Nice blend of power, accuracy and efficiency.

The 7mm-08 and 7x57 can do a fine job on coyotes, bobcats and foxes at considerable distance with 100-gr HP, without having to load it up to death ray velocity.

I have to say I'm surprised at the number of 7/08 rifles you blokes have. Correct me if I'm wrong but I would have thought the 7x57 would be better represented. You see I recently bought one. I'll admit to bit of nostalgia creeping in but the old cartridge can still keep up with the youngsters. No game shot just yet but hand loading and bench testing is going well. The rifle loves Hornady 139gn SST's and 50gn of 4350, or as we refer to it here, ADI2209. I've also fed it some 160gn Woodleigh Protected Points and some 154gn Interlocks. So far it looks like the 139's are winning with consistent .6inch groups at 100m and 2inch at 200. The rifle is a Zastava M70 blued steel and some sort of walnut.

I've a 7mm Rem Mag which I don't get to shoot often enough really. It's super dependable. I've a 7mm-08 Scout which is great to carry but has a couple of mechanical issues so doesn't get used now but I still love it. And today, I saw a Sako 85 Finnlite on Guntrader in 7mm-08 and before I knew what was happening, I bought it. Just promise me you won't tell the current wife. She might just beat me to death with the blunt end.

Hi tacklerat,
Your got the same outfit as me! Ive just started development for mine, with 2209 and 139 interlocks, haven't had a chance to see how they run yet. Glad to see 09 works. i got some cheap highland 139g sp ive been running through it for the brass, they shoot about an inch at 100, i was happy with that for my purposes but .6 i would be very happy.
Do you know the velocity? not that that matters, i'd rather have accuracy!

Hi Wes, I've settled on 50gn of 2209 with the 139SST mate. I chronographed it at just over 2,800fps, and about an inch and a half high at 100, dead on at 200, I'm currently playing with some 160gn Woodleigh PP's. I tried them with 2213sc but couldn't get up to 2,500 so I'm starting with 44gn of 2209 and going up in .5grain increments to 46gn then I'll see how far I want to take it. The Woodleighs were shooting well under an inch at 100 with the old load of 49gn 2213sc but only giving me around 2,460. There's also some work to be done with the 154gn Interlocks.
Cheers,
John

Is the ADI manual that anemic with their data?? it shows a max load for 140's as 46.5g. i just cross referenced from nick harvey and his starting loads are 46g!! I have been tossing up changing to RE-19, it shows pretty good velocity with the heavier projectiles. But as for powder supply ADI is by far easier to get.
What game are you using the 160 woodies on?

Wes

I've got a property not far from home that was stocked with Water Buffalo some years back and they all went feral and became a nuicance. We have to go out there from time to time and thin them out. I did have a 9.3x62 but couldn't use it at the range, there's a limit of 8mm. So I sold it. I thingk the penetration on the Woodleigh will be enough to take a buff with a heart lung shot. I'd already killed a couple with 165gn bullets in a 308 I had. Mainly though the rifle is for deer. Just a chance of a Sambar though and the Woodleighs will be good there. I'm up to 45.5gn 2209 at the moment and averaging 2,538fps over 3 shots.

Just read your post tacklerat, by 8mm limit is that min or max. Sounds weird shooting a nuicance buffalow slightly different to dealing with a few grey squirrels!!!

I have an old 7x57 I bought of a friend John. who runs Fife Field Sports, it was rebarelled by the previous owner shortly before he sadly passed away, John knew I was hanging my nose over a couple of Rigby .275 's but funds were a it low so bagged it me for 650 quids complete with nice old Pecar on swing off mounts.
Lovely old thing it is a Mannlicher retailed by some fancy makers from the Black Isle but the nice gold name engraving went when rebarelled.
Still nice old thing but very hit and miss to shoot .. Literally !!
Going to do some more test loads see if I can get it a it more consistent, then maybe custom it a little, Jamie from Garlands said they used this rifle as a base for their 10k custom rifles and thought he had looked at mine before I pipped him to the post as I had first refusal.
Any tips gratefully accepted.

I have two very different 7mm's.
A Steyr Scout in 7mmx08 which is a very lightweight outfit
A semi custom .280 Ackley which is not lightweight!
However, both fire a similar 140 grain bullet at roughly the same speed, so maybe they are not that different at all?:???:

I love my 7mm08 Brock and Norris with 139 gn Hornady BTSP for stalking and 162 gn A Max's for target work. Having a lightweight 7mm STW made by Dolphin at the moment, would have gone 7mm RUM but struggled to get a lightweight stock manufacturer to make one. It's going to be a bit lively!
