7x57 175gr - marginal or good?

You are right JCS but just needed something to get me shooting, very little choice off the shelf.

Now the proud owner of some rws 123gr and will follow with Geco zero once I can get some on order.
You done well to get the 123 g cone point RWS, my 7x57 absolutely loved them, haven’t been able to get any for several years 😞😞 if you don’t like them I will happily buy them off you 👍👍

In the good old days I picked up a couple of boxes of RWS 175 (ish) gn round nosed cartridges in 7x65R. These would similar / a wee touch faster than 7x57. I bought them for the brass, but shot a few Roe with them. They all ended up in the freezer.

I consider the 7x57 with 175gr marginal for elephant and an already ****ed off buffalo 😁 (where you would use RN-FMJ or ideally a .458Lott), for everything else it’s fine.

It was designed for use with 175gr bullets and that’s what it works best with.

It’s certainly everything you could need for the UK.

Mine shoots 170gr copper fine too.

It underperforms with lightweight bullets so don’t bother in my opinion.
May well have been designed originally for heavy bullets But that doesn’t mean it won’t shoot lighter bullets well also! My Heym sr20 shot really tight groups with the RWS 123g and very good tight groups with 139/140g too, I’ve shot all six species of deer with it and plenty of them, I also used it on boar in Germany and Hungary. Cracking Caliber for all deer in my opinion for what it’s worth 😊👍

What do you actually mean when you say it under performs with lightweight bullets 🤔?

It becomes the same as any other hyped up high velocity marginal calibre. It still kills small game but not as well as heavy bullets and does not penetrate well enough for tough game.

Due to ammunition availability I have used a couple thousand 130gr and it still shoots accurately, it just does not have the authority or versatility of heavy bullets.

If it goes to the game dealer instead of personal consumption you probably won’t notice the difference in the UK.

100% bob on!!

If your shooting light bullets in a 7x57 you have to ask the question-

Why do I shoot a 7x57?
