Accurate small calibre.

Surely for the average operator, there must be a round count per year where any amount under that is really not relevant and shouldn't influence the calibre selection. Is an inappropriate rifle that you are not happy with worth a few quid less in ammo cost?
You pays your money and you takes your choice.-

I've seen a failure from the 250! Many actually.
Use the wrong bullet and it, like others will fail.
Unfortunately the owner of said rifle was stubborn and wouldn't admit his choice of bullet for his choice in rifle was not working until many fails later.
Eventually he agreed to try a different bullet and then it suddenly started to work.

If rating a rifle on a fox not moving one single inch on being shot is the paramount I recommend 270 Winchester or 308 and 3006.
I was using 52grn Factory Winchester HP - not so worried about them not moving an inch as long as it's as instantaneous as posdible. As Robert Ruark used to say 'use enough gun'. I'd add 7mm Rem Mag and maybe even full fat .45-70 loads to your list! 😁

I think the issue my once buddy was having was the rifling cutting the jacket to much.
I have no beef with using enough gun, not at all.
I once had a 243 that turned 100 gn Hornadys into varmint grenades. The rifle went and the exact same load in another rifle after that one performed terminally perfect.

Dump the idea of a 22LR and find a 22 Hornet that consistently shoots factory ammo into sub 1" groups at 100-yards. This probably means finding a CZ.

I had a anshutz 22 hornet for a few years nice rifle. But eventually sold it for a sako75 in 17 remington. The 17 remington were a awesome fox rifle. Then 204ruger came in the scene. Had my sako75 Barreled by Steve Kershaw in 2013.PXL_20250207_122126800.webp

Or to be really really sure, I heartily recommend the .375Ruger with a proper Hollow Point. 200gr @ 3200fps. Field proven too.
That sucker will swallow a 17HMR.

I bought a second hand Sauer 223 for around £500 a few years ago. Very accurate, ammo available in most places and cheap to feed. I use it for target shooting at the moment but can't think of much better for foxes.

Hi guys, just got asked to take care of some foxes on piece of land, only thing is there is studs either side with some expesive horses so owner asked me to use 22 instead of my 223, I normally use rws subsonics on rabbits etc from my 22, but wondering should I get a box of cci stingers for the power boost for the foxes, going to be setting up a backstop and leaving out a bit of food to draw them in as dont want to take chances.

Do you know if your rifle is consistent with stingers?

Depends on range. Subs will do a fine job at close range if you head shoot them but I'd not want to chest shoot foxes with anything out of a 22lr in that situation - too much chance of them running and then expiring where they shouldn't.

53m the shot will be from my shooting position to the spot I am setting up. My RWS subs are dead on at 50, was just thinking more bang will be better here
