Advice on a knife

With me knives are a bit of an addiction,some are pure working tools others are things of beauty (you dont want to use) . I've had gerber, kershaw,buck,boker and puma but to mention a few! At this present time am using a humble frosts clipper (carbon mod. as it holds a keener edge than the stainless mod). Cost me 10 quid and what the heck if i loose it, buy another. better still buy 2 or 3 in the first place. What you must decide is the intended use and buy accordingly. Good luck !

I second that Magnum are also made by Boker . I have a magnum that holds a good edge i also have a Cudman that is like a razor.
Don't spend to much though £ 50 is enough as when you lose it and you WILL it upsets you but not too much>

I have 1 of these NO.4 Its great for all jobs and holds a very sharpe blade.
Sticking atlas, bleeding gralloch and arsehole duties.

I have a Fallkniven H1 with correct leather sheath both in mint condition...£60 posted if you are interested.

Knives are very personal - some like certain styles or types more than others, and it really depends on what you want it for... Keeper or user, general purpose (cutting meat & wood), butchery / skinning / both, cleaning under your nails... etc. You get the picture.
Since this is a stalking site, we'll assume you are looking for a knife to use whilst in pursuit of this fine tradition, so the first question has to be whether you would cry or not if you lost your shiny new sharp thing...
It's entirely possible to spend several hundred pounds on a single knife, but I'd suggest that unless you are independantly wealthy, a knife such as that would spend it's life in a nice presentation case in a drawer, and only get brought out on special occasions.
For a 'user' knife, you can stick to the very cheap, but practical and perfectly servicable, end of the market and go for a Frost/Mora or similar, as has been mentioned. You can then go up to to 20-30 quid mark and look at a number of the other options from Gerber, Buck, Fallkniven, etc - Nieto is another brand that I've found very good. There are many, many options in style and it will depend on what you mainly intend to use it for.
Past that, you may be entering waterworks territory - I know I'd be unhappy at the thought of losing a knife worth more than about £30 somewhere in a field or wood...
Give us a bit more info, and we can target a few more options for you to consider...

I would go for an Opinel so when you DO lose it you wont feel like punching yourself in the face for losing a £100 knife.
I currently use a Remington sheath knife only because I got it as a tip from an American hunter I had out.

Has anyone mentioned Puma? This outfit is closing out the Puma Skinner (German, hand made) for $74 US. The retail in the US is over $200. I don't know if they will ship to the UK but it may be worth a try. I bought three Puma Bowies last Christmas for about the same price, again, on close out. Great Service and obviously, great prices. I love Pumas but some of the folders are now made in China. On the flip side, some of the sheath knives are made by Muella. They make a decent knife too.~Muir

In the past I was a huge fan of Puma knives until I had a blade snap when doing an atlas joint [puma game warden] , I got very little feed back from the company at the time and it realy sickened me at the time.
Only problem with opinel knives are that they have wooden handles, all those who are trained hunters or hold dsc 1&2 should be aware of this!!!!!
I had an F1 until last year when it went "walk about"...It was possibly the sharpest knife I've ever owned ""out of the box"...I've tried various buck fixed blade knives and they are ok, but nothing to write home about.
These days i use either a Frosts Mora or Linder Super Edge with ATS 34 stainless steel. This also comes with an excellent plastic/nylon sheath.
The Linder is an excellent all round stalkers knife. The only way it could be improved was if the handle was day-glo orange!.

The only problem i found with the Linder is that part of the finger groove on the handle was a little "pointed" making it slightly uncomfortable to use (see pic below)
However, 10 minutes with a small file and some wet n dry cured the problem completely.

Personally, I don't want a 6" blade for gralloching roe or muntjac, and much prefer a 3 1/2" blade (give or take a fraction) I do have a couple of those boning knives and would agree they are excellent for butcher work.
Any idea how much those Kydex sheets go for? I have small Ka-Bar which is like a razor, but would prefer a synthetic sheath over the leather on it came with..
