Allopurinol

Allopurinol is usually okay but can be quite rough for some individuals, especially when you start taking it. The person you need to talk to is your GP who will be able to give you the advice that is correct for you.

Cheers

I did get this stuff from the GP, under protest I might add, just wondered if anyone else had the difficulties under start up?

Been on it for years. Controls gout but won't stop an attack if you don't take care of your diet. Odd side effect is that starting the medication will often trigger an attack until it gets into to your system. No real side effects though.

Hi finnbear, I was reccomended allopurinol by my GP after suffering a couple of really bad gout attacks, a couple of years later I changed doctors and the new guy { a south african chap} told me to get off that stuff, he said it can have negative long term effects and told me to change my diet , lose a few stone, cut back on alcohol and I wouldnt need it, so I took his advice got myself fit again, lost nearly 4 stone, changed to a much healthier way of eating and stopped taking the stuff...ive never had any trouble with gout since...touch wood.

Hi Finnbear 270...sorry what I am saying is you probably need to go back to you GP...there are things that can be done to manage issues encountered when you first start allopurinol.
I know it's a pain in the a*se getting an appointment but you will get better advice at a surgery than a forum!
hope it works out for you,
Siggy

Just after a base of info regards the intro to this stuff, from real users.

Finally starting to get proper mobility back in the knees now, nearly three weeks of pure hell over, think that staggering around Greenfield on Sunday helped break the logjam, So if anyone else is starting on this stuff & getting clobbered, stick it out it's worth it in the long run.

So, if you take it whilst actually having an attack of Gout, its likely to make you feel worse.
However once its under control, it will make life very different.

I was not under attack until I started the Allopurinol, what some doc's don't tell you is this stuff seeks out hidden deposits all over the body, strips off the protein "overcoat" & you can be on a rollercoaster ride from hell.

Quite correct, but you should look at the positive sides, " its character building :D and it gets rid of it :thumb:.

At the time I was prescribed it I was also injected with cortizone(spelling) to rotect me from the coming attack with its introduction.
I never had the attack or any others.

If you read all the side-effects I should think gout is a blessing !!!! Never had it myself thankfully but a friend is a sufferer, he's no wimp but he says the pain is excruciating.
