I think the Altbergs are a good boot, I have had a couple of pairs of them. I just personally think the Lowa's are built for a bit more abuse. As a previous poster said though, it depends on what you want them for.

Do you get neighbours discount? ;)

Thanks for the replies guys - probably wavering on the Lowa side, but it is damn close. Meindl were on my list, but having tried the Burma and Borneo my heel just is not the shape for the heel "pocket" of these boots - my feet actually hurt just walking round the shop!!

I suffer (or used to) from plantar fasciitus, which is basically pain in your feet. Mine is from referred pain fom my lower back. Talking to the bootmaker at Altberg a few years ago he recommended "Superfeet" inserts. They are far better than sorbothane, and since using them i have no pain in my feet. Altberg make boots for the British Army demmics who have bad feet and they used to fit these inserts in all boots for people with naff feet. They use their own make of inserts these days. Superfeet inserts are available on the web, I think they are worth their weight in gold.

Edit; I have had lots of pairs of Lundhags and i would recommend them to anyone for cold and wet.

I have had a couple of pairs of meindls which did not last very long, but they were comfy.

Lowa are excellent boots and I would happily buy a pair again if they were on offer, as the Hanwags I have now were.

Personally i have not had Altberg boots, but they are based in England (Yorkshire) so you can get in the car and go and talk to the man who made them, unlike dealing with Le Chameau which i will never do again, bloody robdogs!

Tried all of them, had 2 pairs of Altberg boots and they got worn hard but did not last. My Lowa's (thank you HM Forces) are awesome, great hill boot with plenty of supprt and work well with MacGaitors. 1st pair of meindls were good, second pair not so. I suspect once they got the Army Contract for Afghanistan the quality dropped.

Just my tuppence worth

plantar fasciitis is a real enigma to treat, same presentation can respond differently to same intervention, can be frustrating. supafeet and other generics will often work to reduce pain in cases of plantar fasciitis but are by no means a panacea.

i wondered how long it would be before le chameau were mentioned, ive had 2 pairs of these and the 2nd pair were no where near as good as the first pair ,bought about 10 yrs ago, main problem is the squeaking noise when you walk,i subcontiously thought all the deer could hear it!! thay are now dog walking boots

My lowa mountains have finally worn out, the soles, not the upper. It's taken years! A proper walking boot with stiff soles, you can kick steps with them up muddy banks. At current prices they are great value. Also take a look at the hanwag trapper if you can face the cost.

Not come across hanwag before. Are there many places where you can go try some on?

Well, I finally made a desicion after much trying on and deliberation and went with these http://www.aarondistribution.co.uk/sepia.php

They are the same as the miltary Lowa Mountain GTX -
http://www.aarondistribution.co.uk/mboot.php (which I have had a derivitive of before), but in a brown/olive nubuck. They arrived today from http://www.polimil.co.uk/acatalog/Lowa_Mountain_GTX_Boots_Sepia_Olive_Green____141.00.html and I am, at first initial try, very pleased.

They fit my criteria - supply enough for kneeling shots, stiff enough for the hill, light enough for walking all day, leather so less likely to squeek, not too high, rubber rand to vend off the worst of the scratches, gortex lined, very breathable, comfy, good replaceable vibram sole and not black/military looking! At £140 delivered I think they are very good value for money too!

Not had nubuck before, always preferred something I can polish, but I hear reasonable things about it with nickwax etc, so time to try something new.

Thanks for all the advice, for me, buying boots is a once a decade (and probably a couple of thousand miles!) affair and each individual needs to get it right for them.

Cheers,
Oly

Oly good choice good boot for the money. I get them issued and I literally wear them every day without a doubt sometimes upto 15 hours without taking them off. I have done tree surgery in them, beat on shoots, stalked woodland and hill. During day job driving tends to cause the sole to wear. I always wear sole out before the uppers and only had one pair squeak and one pair unstitch at base of tounge. Mine get loads of abuse. Also got a pair of mendel which I really rate. Just don't let the water go over the top.

I think you have just pointed me in the direction of my next pair of summer stalking boots...

Just an update, done a reasonable number of miles in them, need very little breaking in, feel like I've had them for years....very happy with my choice!
