Always wondered why Lada Nivas rusted

Good one.
I have never owned one but I was at Porsche Weissach in 1977 on a 928 job when they were developing the suspension for the Lada Niva so that dates the car.

I remember '70,s landrovers, the bulkheads would need replacing before the tyres wore out, and sometimes the entire chassis, it was so rusty on the inside, we made a fortune swapping galvanised chassis for the crumbling original.
rust prevention has moved on since the '70,s
I seen lada nivas in comp safari leave many other 4x4,s behind with a decent pilot.

LR claimed galvanising the chassis would cause torsional twisting after manufacture so tell that story to all the aftermarket makers eh?
I was 50 years in automotive design and I hate rust with a passion as it can be easily overcome just costs a bit more and the customers do not return so quickly, or never in the case of 1950-60 Vauxhall or defender owners.

Ladas were importded through Hull and at one time most of the taxis/private hire cars were Ladas much to the annoyance of the city council. Then a guy started a business up called Ruski Buski and exported old Ladas back to Russia I think he empted the city of them, also Ruston Gas Turbines were involved in the trans siberian pipe line project and they had a fleet of Lada company cars ( I was told it was part payment for the work).:)

I used to have one in the 80-90's thin tyres and door seals I made of garden hose to keep the cold water out and the warm water in !! but there were more than a few Rong Rovers that I pulled across field that got stuck as soon as they drove off the tarmac  As to s1-2 Landrovers  they paid most of my bills back in the day and kept the bank man happy ,so I thank them for rotting so fast as they did , And a few crispbags ( Land Rovers ) saved us a bunch of money as we used there rotten steel and powder body's as substructure when building the 100 yrd backstops at our ranges along with a few comer vans and 90 rovers and 170 tonnes of thanet sand .

I had a Niva Cossack for a while. It would go pretty much anywhere off road. However, it really needed a bigger engine, and the brakes were scary to say the least.

Back when I run a breakers yard, Roland ( PaulO might have come across him ) used to buy them all out of HBC acutions.
He had few off me but on the pay as you load them up scheme lol...

I once had a Lada 1200 Estate. True. The very, very, very worst car I ever had.

Until then I'd lain awake at nights having nightmares if Russian tanks sweeping through the Fulda Gap and onward through the North German Plain.

But within weeks after I bought Lada I realised the truth and slept on soundly.

But all technology has done for car owners is swop rust for electrical problems.
Rust many of us can weld up, electrical problems on the other hand will kill all modern cars is the end, including my van.

Hi Bavarianbrit.
Am I correct in thinking the monocoque is just bare steel then and not galvanised?

My Jeep was made by Magna Steyr in Austria and was showing rust issues so had to have the underside treated. Not good on a relatively modern vehicle.

Yes you are correct! Land Rover bulkheads were horrific for rot! Plus the out riggers rusted like hell too. My dad raced his Land Rover in awdc safaris and hill rally’s years ago, eventually went the galvanised chassis route with double Bilstein rose jointed shockers, though it was too heavier vehicle realistically. Although things have massively moved on, those Lada’s were actually quite impressive for what they were, I remember them doing well.

In the seventies a friend bought an old LR Series 1 80"...the one with the bog chain...and it turned out to be a pre-production prototype which had a galvanised chassis, No. R27 and engine no. R25. (or very close) The front axle swivel balls were machined from bronze. So they knew how to make them less vulnerable if they wanted.

I’m sure that is where my Chrysler 300crd was made and the underside does not look how a modern 10 yr old car should! Still it’s very quick for a hearse!

I’m intrigued to know which one Tim. I used to live down the road from the one at Smith’s farm Allshots if I remember rightly. Happy memories tearing bits of old cars to fit to my even older ones!

"I heard labour and the unions were responsible for rust,, by the time the british leyland car workers finally got back to work,,, everything had gone rusty." ;)
