Ammunition Shortages - UK

I hope to avoid a debate on why, but more a constructive conversation on how to overcome potential ammunition short falls here in the UK.

As with most of you I'm sure, I've noticed a steady decline in the availability of reloading consumables over the past 6 months. So far nothing more than perhaps hanging on a couple more days than usual to get what you need. Small and large rifle primers were the first pinch. But now im struggling getting the .30 & .224 heads i commonly use. i haven't even given any thought to 22lr either!

Where does everyone think the US demand will take the UK shooter & reloader in the coming months? Will we all need to shoot less / smarter by the end of the year? Will manufacturers ramp up production?

I've personally moved away from US manufactured materials as much as possible, though I'm told its futile, and that the ammunition shortage will effect us all before long. I'm now more reliant on Finland's production than anywhere else though I doubt Finland are exempt from the US draw on ammunition either!

I spoke to 3 reputable UK suppliers last week, all of which told me that .30 175 Gr, SMK heads are out of stock, and no imports are booked for the foreseeable. moreover, in some instances exports back to the US are occurring frequently. fortunately for me I have a stock of 700, and a further 500 under the counter waiting collection. That's still only 8-10 months of shooting for me.

Maybe I better by myself a springer!

We are golden for .22lr, thanks to Eley and old stock.

In the USA it's got so bad that old or 'new' old stock is selling for prices higher than pre-Covid. If FB is to be believed, people are buying old tubs (think tin cans!) of IMR powder found in attics/basements.

Miraculous that a lot if it is still fine, and how much has been 'unearthed'.

As for the UK, some RFD's stocked up pre-Brexit with supply issues in mind. Some will undoubtedly go down the route of US ammo scalpers and hike the prices incrementally until they either run out or restock.

Buy European and stop moaning.

I‘m not saying it cannot happen, but I certainly don‘t want to be dependent on the Yanks’ cretinism.
Like you I have moved away from American shooting products starting 10 years ago. No reason to throw away my existing Redding dies, but anything new, be it consumables or tools, I buy from European manufacturers.

Speak for yourself 🇩🇪 :p.

Hopefully...🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I stocked up recently as many friends from the US were telling me about the shortages.

I bought 2000 primers, 600 various bullets and enough brass to last a while...hopefully that will span any shortage.

can’t hurt to have it sitting unless they ban all lead and want us to hand it in.

regards,
Gixer

I know you said stay away from the causes of any ammo/reloading shortages, but I suspect that as the world covid situation begins to improve, the availability of items including ammo and components will, with a bit of lag, improve too. The manufacturers will want to get back to churning out their products ASA I'd say.

I voted for independence not only from Westminster but also from Brussels.
From different news reports the EU is on a precipice with no firm direction and a number of countries starting to question the EU’s mandate!

The EU began as a trading block, and whilst it's mandate has expanded considerably since the days of the European Coal and Steel commission, it's central focus remains unchanged.

Personally don't believe in referendums.

But whose central focus is it? Germany’s? France’s? Or who’s?

Can't wait for Scotland and Wales to become free states and have free flow access to the EU . Hoping there will be a lots of cheap nice homes for sale or 3rd home holiday lets then the Cornish can stop moaning . ;)

Well the EU is either Germany's 4th Reich, conquering Europe without blitzkrieg or a democratic European state in the making that can take on the world in terms of keeping it's citizens' safe and being competitive on the world market, whichever you believe. But frankly, at present it's failing on both accounts, so it's anyone's guess.

However, we're swaying pretty far off topic.

I ordered some Hornady .264 Win brass last month from one of the big online retailers. I just heard from them that the expected ship date is December 2021. I am having to use 7mm Rem brass, no big deal but I do like having the correct head stamp on my ammo. Our stores are out of everything. It is going to be well over a year before anything starts showing up in any quantity. Scopes too, I can not find a Sworo Z3 scope anywhere.
