Reloading Equipment from the USA

Do it get your kit from America. I was over in New York City with the family and managed to get an afternoon to myself jumped on a train out to the nearest Bass pro shop. You will be overwhelmed with the kit on offer. But make sure before you go that the shop you are going has the items. Do it online just select the store location and double check what you want. I bought the Rock Chucker press and dies big saving. Flew with British airways the baggage weight allowance's are good so packed into suitcase dropped off at JFK and picked it up Inverness. Going again next year shopping list is growing.

Evening All,

With ammunition prices continuing to creep (jump or skyrocket may be more accurate - I was recently offered a bow of .270 lead for £89 in my RFD!) I have now got the view that reloading is going to work out cheaper in the long run and the increased accuracy potential appeals.

I am in the US next week and have been eyeing up some of the reloading kits on sale in shops such as Bass Pro etc and they are considerably cheaper ($630 or £480 with mil discount for the Lyman ultimate kit rather then £860 from a UK retailer) I'm all for supporting UK business however that is a considerable saving!

ignoring the fact its heavy sitting around 24kg and bulky - I think I can make it work with additional baggage etc...

My question is: is this the best value kit to go for at that sort of price or is it worth spending more for a new coming to reloading and has anyone brought reloading kit from the USA on commercial flights and can anyone sanity check me that it is indeed legal!?

Brought back stuff from boston in July, took the time at the airport to tell The TSA desk what I had he had a quick look in the bag put some sticker on it then I went and checked in, id also emailed them prior to the flight to ask and showed the guy their reply which said some like reloading and optics were not firearms components, no issue all the way home picked my bag up at airport and went home, I had a seamans ticket so 42 kg allowance as the bag with all the stuff was nearer 30,

There is no problem legally in bringing most of that stuff back to the UK with you. On my recent trip to Scotland through Heathrow and Aberdeen, I carried four boxes of copper ttsx bullets and 250 cartridge cases (new with no powder residue) in my checked bags and had no issues. Also brought .375 dies and bullets back home with me. Up to you on the decision to buy or not.

I’m thinking about trying to bring back some brass early next year.

Just to clarify: you had all this stuff in checked luggage, and had no problems?

Yes, thats correct. Had them in the box as they were shipped to me and nestled in my checked bag. I never opened the box but it sounded like they were loose or bagged and loose.

Small stuff can be expensive here iin the UK Hornadys comparators Forster case trimmers or decent dies and scales which would make for a small light package then get an older ca. 1995 Rock Chucker secondhand in the UK as they were made from better materials, now they come from China to the RCBS plant to be finish machined but the metal is iffy quality.
Regarding the older Rock Chuckers, egun.de a gun, and gun related german auction site, regularly have the rcbs2 and even at times 1 for sale, and at quite reasonable prices too.
Some of them will ship abroad, and for non silly prices too. They tend to specify if they're willing to ship it abroad in the add, but even the ones that stipulates that they wont, can at times be reasoned with, if one sends them a dm. It might be a good place for you to look @GR788 if you fancy and older Roch Chucker🤠

That’s a very kind offer.

I’m after .22 ARC brass.

If it is any bearing on how I might get treated by TSA, I am an American citizen!

(Best aristocratic British voice: ‘I say there, do you KNOW who I am…’)
I'm afraid that I don't have anything in that chambering nor do I know anyone that does but if I can be of any help please let me know.

Mungo,

As Mountain Bug has said, feel free to use either he or I if you need assistance. As to reloading kit, it is considerable cheaper here, and as the OP said, many of the suppliers provide a decent discount for military or law enforcement (active or retired). If you want to order something that is legal but supplier won’t ship to the UK (MidwayUSA is one) you can ship to us and we’ll forward it on.

We have taken over bits and bobs for reloading on every trip over. Never had a bit of trouble. Common sense says stay away from primers, powder and once fired cases and they literally don’t care. The only issue I ever had was to seek clarification on a scope in regards to ITAR. As long as I stayed away from certain reticles there was no issue with the scopes.

As to personal baggage, most airlines charge $50-75 for a second checked bag up to 50 pounds, much cheaper than shipping. Last time I shipped to the UK a 4# item was $50

Stuffed a few bits from Cabela's in my wife and 10-year old Daughter's suitcases when returning from Disney without problems. That said I refrained from Berger bullets and a Nightforce scope.

The electronic case trimmer was offered in both voltage options.

I ended up buying smaller bits including dies. No issue on that (as you would expect) through TSA and it was below the customs limit anyway for the UK side. It saved me a fair wack for the small amount I spent overall.

Other mostly heavier bits including press sourced elsewhere as I took the advice of some of the other replies on here 👍

Thanks very much! That’s very generous and much appreciated.

I have family in Denver and Phoenix, so addresses to send stuff to isn’t a problem. The real worry is whether TSA will make a fuss about brass or not.
