Effluent in our rivers is the result.of more sewage entering the system than planned for. Much of that comes from the extra six million European arseh0les in the country. Now that's not entirely the fault of the EU, but it is ome of the predictable consequences.

It is a disgrace but definitely not a new problem. It was certainly a problem in the 80s.and for at least 150 years before that.

Come on Abthorpe, I knew it wouldn't be long before you turned up to Poo Poo everything I say. You seem to be stalking me around these boards like the Fact Finder General, from Political Expert, to Ukraine war correspondent, & now Environmental Spokesman.
Blaming European Ars0les for sewage in our rivers is the most absurd case of gaslighting I heard. & then going on to say the problem existed in the eighties & 150 years before that, & long before these six million European Ars0les were even in the country, well come on man, you cant have it both ways.
Please keep in mind I am not the enemy here, sewage in our water is, we may not agree politically but if you have issues then I suggest you take it up with Feargal.

Sewage in rivers hasn't suddenly appeared since Jan the 31 2020. The roots of this menace predate Brexit. It is the result of over-population, decades of decaying infrastructure, rudderless and incompetent government and fudged planning, buck-passing and short-termism.
Brexit is irrelevant and blaming it is also an example of gaslighting. Our population has increased by 10 million since Theresa May's government, if we believe the official figures, which will be a gross underestimate and don't take onto account illegal migration. Over population is over population and bad government is bad government, whether we're in the EU or out. Cess pit Britain has been long in the planning.

20 plus odd years ago I used ti fish the river Windrush near Oxford. It was a beautiful river with a goid head wild brown trout, grayling and barbel. Top end of the Thames also had lots of trout.

Now just chocked with sewerage.

I then moved up to Edinburgh. 10 years ago all midlothian and east lothian rivers were full of seatrout, trout and a few salmon, some of a decent size. I caught a 2lb grayling under the Dean Bridge in the middle of Edinburgh.

Now all those rivers are full of **** and you dare not let the dogs swim in them.

Government’s both north and south of the border have a single minded nationalist agenda and that is all that they care about.

And if their champion property developers and big business want to polute then just crack on. Didn’t Liz Truss remove all the Environment Agencies funding.

And now that we are out of Europe they can remove any further legislation and don’t run the risk of any penalties from Europe.

And as for all those promised grants etc to replace all the European Farming and regional grants - well that money has been ****ed up against the wall used to spend on endless theings like PPE or ferries produced or sold by companies that belong government cronies and ee don’t worry if they charge 3 times the price.

I do at long last think that the penny is beginning to drop that both the Tory party and the SNP are well beyond their sell by date.

This is well worth a watch and difficult to argue with when comparative data between UK and other leading countries is compared. We have all suffered the pandemic, most of Europe is far more reliant upon and effected by Ukraine and Russian oil and gas supply, yet out all the leading countries we are showing zero growth - the others are doing nicely Only Russia is doing worse thanks to sanctions.

And the effect of Brexit has reduced our GDP by 4%, and we have replaced it by a trade deal with Australia which has added 0.02%.

They have ****ed up our economy, and environment is a poor relation.

We are not even attending the Cop27.

I wouldn't dispute any of that. But Brexit has not created atrocious government, it has revealed it. All our current political orthodoxies are well past their sell-by date, including supranational technocratic cold-war autocracy. EU membership wasn't and will never be the answer. It was just another rotten layer pealed away from a rotten onion and the deeper we go the more rotten it gets.

I warned many people that one of the consequences of Brexit was that once again the Uk would become the dirty man of Europe, the days of picking loo paper off your fishing line on the beaches are returning, rivers once again becoming open sewers. Whatever your views on Europe, they made us clean up our rivers & seas, improve our infrastructure, sometimes with European grants. The irony is that a number of water companies are French owned, & they would not get away with this in their own country. Anyway, that's irrelevant now, would you want your children swimming in those beautiful chalk streams now that the Government turns a blind eye, the shareholders are more valued than our childrens safety.Thanks to Feargal for continuing to highlight the problem. The water companies blame increased housing, they are actually being paid more to do this.To swim in our own effluent. Nice work.

I saw a documentary on the building of this project, simply unbelievable feat of engineering, replacing not only Victorian drains but Roman ones too! As usual London sucks all the wealth out of the rest of the country, but hey, its a massive step-in the right direction. Positive Vibrations.

The effluent goes into the river at Slough ST works and water is abstracted downstream at Hampton water works. It is then " Cleaned" and circulated via the ring main around the city. What now??
In another life I was involved with constructing Worcester's new water works. The water was drawn from the Severn, cleaned, settled in a final water tank which was a manned area and then circulated. A few years back a big panic in Worcester with folk being ill , some chemical??? had got in the river upstream. Interesting that the final water tank area was no longer manned for testing. Just shows what we are having to put up with.

Companies were being fined for river pollution BEFORE Brexit AND afterwards so your comment doesnt carry weight.
The sewage problem rumbles on, water companies like Drs Surgeries dont and wont comment against planning as they are not allowed, both benefit hugely from the new monies from housing, whilst not being able to get an appointment and releasing sewage they cant cope with are collateral damage. The asylum seekers and immigrants gotta have houses though.

Thats got nothing on Norwich. Late seventies or early eighties, amongst other things Mercury was discovered in Norwich's River Wensum, the source was confirmed at May & Bakers chemical plant which had an outfall pipe in the Wensum, just upstream of the ring road. Anglian Water Authority piped its drinking water nearby. Anglian water now gets its water from Taverham, 4 miles upstream. May & Baker changed its name to Rhone Poulenc & now Aventis, manufacturer of herbicices & Pesticides. The scientist who made this discovery was found dead floating in the Wensum shortly after his discovery. I remember reading about this in the press, but cant find much relating to this on the internet. Spooky. I always thought Norwich folk were a bit loopy.
