Any .284 Winchester shooters?

You may struggle with some short actions and the 284 Winchester - especially with heavier bullets.

The Wyatts magazine boxes work fine if the action is machined properly in the first place.

Ive run a 6.5x284 for fifteen years over several barrels and never had a feed issue.

When this barrel is toast i'll be changing to a straight 284 or 284 Shehane.

Back in the day I begged my father to buy a 284 Model 100 b3ecause of the performance. Instead he bought the 308 and used it happily all hie life. I have shot several but the most contact I've had with the 284 Winchester cartridge has been reforming the brass to 7.5x55 Swiss back when it was unavailable in the US. A simple neck up and shoot.~Muir
Could I neck down 7.5x55 Swiss to get the hard to find in Europe .284 cases then?

I doubt it. Different head dimension, and would have to be fire formed, I think.
Lapua make 6.5-284 cases and Norma make 284W cases, at a price, of course!

See this thread resurrected !
I just asked Laurie queries about this as a basic home loader ... long time but still basic ....
For me if I go this route it will be to take hit on .284 Norma brass to Dave neck turning I think..

For those considering a custom route for this cartridge Nathan Foster at Ballistic Studies has this to say:

"[FONT=&quot]There is one action that is absolutely ideal for the .284, an action which is too long for optimum utilization of short action cartridges yet too short for flexible COAL’s with long action cartridges - the Mauser M98, in both its original military guise or as modified by Parker Hale. There are literally thousands upon thousands of these extremely well made, robust actions, designed for the Mauser 57mm case length. Magazine length of the M98 (and Parker Hale mod) is 3.307” (84mm)."

Thread resurrected !
I was reading in an old American Rifleman today Jan 1973 on page 28 it referred to the savage 99 available in this calibre and afterwards went on to mention some .284 wildcats, the (.30-.284, as a 30-06 match) / .270-.284 / .35-.284 / .25-.284. Then came a .338-.284 as a super elk/red deer round and finally .375-.284 also. There is some food for thought there when the present barrel is shot out just have it rebored & re-rifled to larger calibre and the barrel metal has been conditioned by the previous heat and pressures so should be very stable.

Something different, a short 16" 284 we had in the workshop a few years ago. With the right load the owner claims to be supersonic at 1200m. Mainly used as a hunting rifle.

Must be a hell of a muzzle flash from that one Edi

The 284 is a good cartridge (even better improved and used as shenane variant)

The 7mm SAUM may be a good choice for the new rifle buyer (albeit in the UK you'd likely struggle to find any such factory rifles on the shelf), but the 284 offers the existing 243, 308, 30-06, etc etc rifle owner the opportunity for a simple rebarrel plus magnum magazine follower (thank you jon2).

[The SAUMs and WSMs use a larger magnum cartridge size case-head, not the 'standard' 0.473" so a suitably dimensioned bolt is also needed.]
Ah yes in the past I’ve had two of the 7mm SAUM as well as two of the 300 SAUM . In the WSM line I’ve had the 270 , 300 and the 325 . All five cartridges are very good killing rounds and all those I had were quite accurate with my handloads . At the present of have none of those mentioned only the 6.5mm Sherman Short Mag that’s derived from the SAUM case . As to the original question of the 284 I always had dies and brass for the cartridge until recently but I never owned or fired one . Played with someone else’s 6.5/284 some as well as a now deceased friends 25/284 . While they were both fine I could generally do as well with a 25-06 , 6.5-06 or 280 and yes I own or have owned all three of them .

From reading the old American Rifleman it was ambivalent and said some advised against the .284_article.webp6mm as having too much powder capacity for the cal.

Ha, I opened a .284 20 pack in my safe and the magazine was hiding in there, I must have put it in after sighting the beast in, of course the fired cases are somewhere out on the range after being chucked out of said beast.

I've read this all with interest as I've just ordered a 6mm 284 to be built upon my sako 75 action lll
Interested in how you get on. I had a 75 III rebarrelled into 260 and always felt the short magazine was a limiting factor and couldn't get the most of of the extra case capacity that the 260 offered over 6.5x47mm as bullets had to be seated really deep in the case. I'm now running 95gn bullets in it and not an issue but I felt it was with 120gn bullets. I guess 6mm bullets will be a bit shorter than 6.5mm so you might be ok.

I’m 60, and have lived In the US my entire life. I have never seen a .284 rifle and know no one who has one. I did see a half box of loaded ammo once at a garage sale.

Why does this thread keep getting resurrected?!
Wot? Threads resurrected? On SD? Surely not. Anyhow I am sure that very resurrection question has been asked many times already!
As an aside and just cos I am on - anyone any views on 6.5 Creedmoor; best rifle/calibre/bullet/bullet weight for boar/ roe/fallow/red et al; neck-sizing or full-length; seating depth/bullet (or head - oh oh); leaving moddy on or not; FFP or second; best malt etc……….?
Just asking.

On my last renewal, I added a 284/7mm, intending to get a 7mm-08 and get it rebarreled to 284 after a few thousand rounds. An SD member had a 284, that he had used for stalking, for sale, so I now have two 284s, one with a 32" barrel and another with a 24" barrel. I've got some Peterson 284 cases, so I might be using a mandrel and not crimping, for this new rifle.
