Any benefits on having a thermal scope on a .22LR

Need to change my day scope for an all rounder day/night scope, and as I can’t get hold of an C50 , I was thinking about a Talion XQ38…

Any thoughts?

Arguably, a thermal scope on a 22lR gives more benefits than any other type of scope on a 22LR
The reason - covertness
As for the Talion - it's an Axion in a shape that fits onto a rifle.
They will not be as good as the Thermions, but probably OK for rimmie ranges

Cheers

Any experience with the Thermion XM30 ?

Btw , I ditched the Gryphon and went for a Axion XG35 …

I absolutely love thermals on my FAC airguns and rimfire. So many benefits over normal night vision.

  • Fast target acquisition, wider FOV and instantly viewed on screen, even with it's back to you.
  • Fast follow up shots and tracking
  • Shooting in stubble is a nightmare for night vision, very difficult to get on target, with thermal it's a piece of cake.
  • Shooting into woodland with NV you can get IR bounce back and not view into the depths of a woodland or canopy.
  • Mist kills NV performance with glare and bounce back ,thermal cuts through it like a hot knife.
  • Far safer than night vison as you see the full terrain and backdrop device dependant.
Price wise if you want to spend the least money on a thermal with the best long range image at that price point , Senopex A5.

I use myself
  • Thermion 2 XP50
  • Thermion 2 XP50 Pro LRF
  • Hik SQ50
  • Senopex A7
  • Senopex S7
Although for rimfire use I would go A5 or S5, don't be fooled these provide a much sharper and more detailed image than even the top iray or hik models... I also use T2 XP50 and SQ50 for airgun and rimfire.

Although I do use a C50 and Pard NV008S LRF also dependant on the location and terrain, day/night distance, etc

I have hours of footage from all the above...

The most valuable information I could give anyone is be very careful of what advice you take. Youtube, promoters, etc are full of landmines and salesmen waiting to take your hard earned... everyone's got the best dog, haven't they !!

Each to their own but I’m not convinced if there is a benefit in this type of scenario,I get the covert thing but i can’t say using NV puts you at a disadvantage.
The whiting out thing with ir bouncing off undergrowth, if it’s that bad you are unlikely to be able to take a shot through it with a thermal without clipping something, so even if you can see it doesn’t mean a shot is on.
Rimfire ranges, target acquisition really shouldn’t be a problem whatever you use.
I recently cleared a few rabbits from the plantation in the first part of the video before a quick look on the golf course, some of the rabbits sat there clear as day through the thermal only for the shot to be obscured by foliage when looking through NV and had to make adjustments to thread the shot through with 100% confidence. It could be argued that a top end thermal scope is more detailed than a £2K plus XQ38LRF spotter but the Talon won’t be much better and you won’t beat digital for detailed images anyway.
The amount i had to shuffle in the first part of the vid to get a clear shot I know for a fact I would have been pinging off stuff with a thermal.
Re: the C50 love mine but I wouldn’t put it on either of my rimmys, on the rabbits on a prolific permission you could be putting the gun on the sticks 50 or more times in a session so for me lightweight is the key and the 008 fits the bill, C50 stays on the C/F.

I had a Pard 008 LRF on my .25 FAC airgun, very flimsy mount and wouldn’t hold zero.
Hmm. I have heard this on a number of occasions - all I can say is my 008p is on my beloved .222 since January - no issues whatsoever with the provided mount and a helluva lot of use since then. As per my earlier post I shot a fox at 317yards the other morning with it. I also have a 007 on the .17 and love it - day and night!

I would have thought that rabbit shooting with a loopy trajectory rifle the biggest problem will be getting within rage and knowing hold over, if the new Pard 008s lrf does what its supposed to do this should be the best answer.

As for i/r spooking rabbits ---------well there is a lot more things that will also do this, weather shooting on foot or from a vehicle.

There is nothing as deadly as decent thermal for shooting rabbits. I use either a vehicle mounted LRF thermal spotter or Accolade LRF for ranges. Then I use mildot reticules for holdover. With a 50yd zero the rimfire is basically 1 mildot 80 yds, 2 mildot 100yds, etc . It's critical that you have an angle indicator for longer ranges, if the unit does not have this by default, I use an external illuminated electronic level..
When the covers up and lots of foilage you can find what your shooting also.. All of my mates use thermal also and we shoot thousands of rabbits a month with similar setups..
